Institute of Child Health This is the official page of Institute of Child Health, Kolkata, the first pediatric hospital in India. Chaudhuri, the pioneer of Indian pediatrics.

ICH is a trust run non-profit organization serving the children of the society beyond all means over the last 70 years. Institute of Child Health – A Legacy of Compassionate Pediatric Care

The Institute of Child Health (ICH), Kolkata, holds the distinction of being India’s first dedicated pediatric institute, envisioned and established by Dr. K.C. The foundation stone was laid on 12 August 1954,

and with support from the Corporation of Calcutta, construction began on 14 April 1955. The outpatient services, equipped with full-fledged laboratory facilities, were launched on 23 January 1956, followed by the inauguration of the inpatient department, including 50 beds and neonatal care, on 15 June 1956. The institute was formally inaugurated by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, then Prime Minister of India, on January 16, 1957 — a landmark moment that heralded a new era for pediatric healthcare in the country. Dr. Chaudhuri’s vision was far ahead of its time. He imagined not just a hospital, but a comprehensive center that integrated preventive, promotive and curative care, with a strong focus on teaching and research. He introduced the nation to the concept of “positive and total child care,” recognizing the child in their entirety — emotionally, intellectually, physically and socially. Today, ICH continues to carry forward this noble legacy, committed to delivering holistic, affordable, and quality healthcare to children.

Banish the Fear: Debunking Common Myths About Inhalers 🌬️👶

Many parents and patients hesitate to use inhalers due to long-standing misconceptions. However, medical experts emphasize that inhalers are the safest and most effective way to manage asthma. Let’s look at the facts from today’s special feature in "Prescription" Dr. Agnimita Giri Sarkar:

❌ Myth: Inhalers are a last resort for severe patients only.
✅ Fact: Using an inhaler early in the diagnosis helps control asthma quickly and prevents lungs from structural damage.

❌ Myth: Inhaler doses are too strong and harmful for children.
✅ Fact: The dose of medication in an inhaler is actually much lower than oral syrups or tablets. Because it goes directly to the lungs, it has minimal impact on the rest of the body, making it completely safe for kids.

❌ Myth: Inhalers are highly addictive.
✅ Fact: Inhalers are a delivery mechanism, not an addiction. They keep the airways clear so you or your child can breathe freely and live an active life.

Asthma is not something to ignore, but with early intervention and the right technique (like using a spacer for children), it is entirely manageable.
