A Doctors' Day to Remember
This Doctors' Day was spent not in celebration, but in the operating theatre.
Our team at the Department of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, SSKM Hospital, worked through the night to perform a complex emergency thumb replantation.
After nearly 10 hours of meticulous microsurgery, we were able to successfully restore blood flow to the amputated thumb—giving the patient the best possible chance at regaining function.
Being part of such a case is both humbling and inspiring. It is a reminder that the greatest celebration of our profession lies in the privilege of serving patients when they need us the most.
This achievement was possible only because of the unwavering dedication of our entire multidisciplinary team—our mentors, colleagues from Trauma Care, Anaesthesia, Nursing, and the OT staff. My sincere gratitude to each one of them.
The recognition is deeply appreciated, but the greatest reward will always be seeing our patient recover.
The Times of India coverage of the case is attached below.
Kolkata: An Uttarpara resident, who lost his right thumb in an alleged chopper attack, got it surgically reconstructed, thanks to the efforts of the doctors at SSKM Hospital.
