Strengthening National Surveillance for Acute Diarrhoeal Diseases

ICMR National Institute for Research in Bacterial Infections (ICMR-NIRBI), Kolkata, successfully conducted a three-day Pre-initiation Laboratory Training Programme (19–21 August 2026) under the project "Pan-India Surveillance of Acute Diarrhoeal Disease through the DHR-ICMR IRDL/VRDL Network (PM-ABHIM)."

The workshop brought together scientists and laboratory professionals from participating sentinel centres across India to standardise patient enrolment, specimen collection, laboratory diagnostics, data management, and outbreak investigation. The programme included hands-on training in bacteriology, virology, parasitology, molecular diagnostics, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, and digital surveillance tools, laying the foundation for harmonised nationwide surveillance of severe acute diarrhoeal diseases.

The initiative marks an important step towards strengthening India's laboratory network for evidence-based public health action, outbreak preparedness, and infectious disease surveillance.

ICMR-NIRBI, Kolkata, observed the 16th Indian Organ Donation Day 2026 by organising an Organ Donation Pledge and Awareness Programme on 19th August 2026.

The programme began with an organ donation pledge, followed by an address by the Director.

Dr. Tanushree Chatterjee, Phaco-Refractive Surgeon, Dr. Agarwal’s Eye Hospital, delivered an insightful talk on organ donation, highlighting the importance of awareness and the life-saving impact of this noble act.

ICMR-NIRBI proudly celebrated the 80th Independence Day of India with a flag hoisting ceremony at 10:30 a.m. on 15 August 2026 at the premises of the NIRBI-1 Building. The Director, staff members and their family members participated in the celebration.

Following the hoisting of the National Flag, Dr. Santasabuj Das, Director, ICMR-NIRBI, delivered the inaugural address. Staff members also shared their thoughts on the significance of Independence Day in our everyday lives. The programme included the introduction of the newly joined administrative staff, followed by patriotic cultural performances by staff and students. The celebration concluded with the singing of the National Anthem.

ICMR-SHINE 2026: Inspiring Young Minds towards Biomedical Research
As part of the nationwide ICMR-SHINE programme held on 11–12 August 2026, Model Rural Health Research Unit (MRHRU), Darjeeling, organized an engaging programme at BSF Senior Secondary School, Kadamtala, Siliguri.
Around 210 students from Classes IX, X, XI and XII participated in two batches. The programme aimed to nurture scientific curiosity and create awareness about biomedical research and future career opportunities in science.
Dr. Sandip Mukhopadhyay welcomed the students and provided an overview of ICMR’s activities across India. He encouraged the young participants to visit MRHRU-Darjeeling and the laboratories of ICMR-NIRBI and consider scientific research as a rewarding career pathway.
The programme included an exciting quiz competition for Classes XI and XII, with mementoes presented to successful candidates. A practical handwashing demonstration, supported by faculty members of the College of Nursing, was another highly engaging component.
Participants were also provided with ICMR-SHINE branded notebooks, pens and snacks.
Ms. Bhawna Sharma, Principal of the School, appreciated the initiative and thanked ICMR and the MRHRU-Darjeeling team for organizing such an informative and inspiring programme. The students expressed that the session had motivated them to learn more about science and explore careers in research.

Bringing together 22 delegates from Mizoram, Meghalaya, Assam, Jharkhand, Odisha, and Andaman & Nicobar Islands, the interactive workshop focused on QMS implementation, biosafety, and laboratory quality standards to enhance regional diagnostic capabilities. On 31 July 2026, ICMR–National Institute for Research in Bacterial Infections (ICMR–NIRBI), Kolkata, hosted a scientific seminar by Dr. Somnath Dutta, Associate Professor, Molecular Biophysics Unit, Division of Biological Sciences, Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru.

On 22 July 2026, ICMR–National Institute for Research in Bacterial Infections (ICMR-NIRBI), in collaboration with the ICMR Bioethics Unit, organised an Advanced Workshop on “Updates on Biomedical Ethics, Good Clinical Practice (GCP), and Regulatory Aspects of Clinical Research in India” at ICMR-NIRBI, Kolkata.

The workshop was attended by 44 participants and covered key areas including Single Ethics Review for Multicentric Research, updates in Good Clinical Practice (GCP), regulatory aspects of clinical research, clinical research governance, and ethical and regulatory challenges in academic clinical trials.

The workshop featured insightful sessions by resource persons Dr. Nandini Kumar, Dr. Roli Mathur, Prof. Sandeep Kaushal, Dr. Sandip Mukhopadhyay, and Dr. Saibal Das, who shared their valuable expertise on key ethical and regulatory aspects of clinical research. The programme aimed to strengthen understanding of ethical and regulatory practices and promote responsible, high-quality clinical research in India.
