ABSTRACT:
Anti diabetic medications treat diabetes mellitus by lowering glucose levels in the blood. With the exceptions of insulin, exenatide and premlintide, all are administered orally, thus called oral hypoglycemic agents or anti hyperglycemic agents. There are various established adverse effects related to their use including hypoglycemia, weight gain, gastrointestinal disturbances, lactic acidosis and fluid retention. Diabetes mellitus is a persistent health problem that requires innovative strategies and multifactorial approach for the treatment. Ayurveda because of its holistic approach not only aims to achieve strict glycemic control but also treat root cause of the disease. In this study a humble effort is made to evaluate the efficacy of ‘sarvapramehahara panchayoga:’ (guduchi, triphala, lohabhasma, shilajatu, pathya with honey) mentioned in pramehachikitsa adhikara of chakradatta.
