Insulin is one of the most commonly used high-alert medications in hospitals. Yet, administration errors, storage issues, and disposal gaps continue to pose patient safety risks.
Today at Bharath Hospital, Kottayam, we conducted a Nurse Awareness Program on Insulin led by Dr. P. Sudheesh, Consultant Endocrinologist, with participation from 24 nursing professionals.
The session focused on:
✅ Safe insulin administration practices
✅ Correct injection techniques and site rotation
✅ Prevention of insulin-related medication errors
✅ Storage and handling requirements
✅ Safe disposal practices
✅ Strengthening patient education and counselling
What often gets overlooked in healthcare is that patient safety is not built during audits. It is built during routine clinical practice through continuous education, competency development, and reinforcement of best practices.
Every nurse who understands the science behind insulin administration contributes directly to safer care, better glycemic control, and improved patient outcomes.
My appreciation to Dr. Sudheesh for sharing his expertise and to our nursing team for their active participation and commitment to learning.
Quality is not a department. It is a daily clinical habit.
