*International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking*

The *Department of Psychiatry, Government Medical College (GMC) Handwara*, in collaboration with the *District Mental Health Unit (DMHU)* and the Addiction Treatment Facility *(ATF)*, today observed the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking with great enthusiasm and commitment.

The programme aimed to raise awareness about the harmful effects of substance abuse, promote a drug-free lifestyle, and encourage collective action towards prevention, early intervention, and rehabilitation. Healthcare professionals, staff members, and participants reaffirmed their commitment to creating a healthier, safer, and addiction-free society.

*Day 1 of Grass Root Intervention and Community Training on Rehabilitation Module under Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan, J&K*

The first day of the *8th Batch Grass Root Intervention and Community Training* on Rehabilitation Module commenced today at the *Department of Psychiatry, Government Medical College Handwara, under the aegis of Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan (NMBA).*

The training programme is being conducted from *23rd to 25th June 2026.*

The inaugural session was formally opened by *Dr. Aijaz Ahmad Bhat, Medical Superintendent, Associated Hospital GMC Handwara,* who highlighted the importance of strengthening community-based rehabilitation services and enhancing the capacity of frontline workers in addressing substance use disorders and mental health concerns.

The opening session was followed by an interactive presentation by *Dr. Rouf Ahmad Mir, Assistant Professor, Department of Psychiatry, GMC Handwara,* who served as the resource person for the first technical session. Dr. Rouf Ahmad Mir emphasized the role of grassroots interventions, early identification, community participation, and rehabilitation strategies in achieving the objectives of a drug-free society.

The training witnessed active participation from the attendees, with fruitful discussions on community engagement, rehabilitation approaches, and the implementation of mental health and addiction services at the grassroots level.

The programme will continue over the next two days with expert sessions by faculty members and mental health professionals from the Department of Psychiatry GMC Handwara.

*The 7th Batch of the 3-Day Training Programme on Grass Root Intervention and Community Training on Rehabilitation Module under Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan,* J&K successfully concluded today at *GMC Handwara.*

The programme was organized by the *Department of Psychiatry* Govt Medical College Handwara with active participation of teachers from the Education Department Kupwara.

During the three-day training programme, participants were sensitized about substance abuse prevention, rehabilitation strategies, community intervention, and the important role of educators in creating awareness among youth for a drug-free society.

The initiative was conducted under the ongoing *100 Days Nasha Mukt Jammu and Kashmir Abhiyan* with the aim of strengthening grassroots awareness and community participation against drug abuse.

Dr Owais was the speaker of the event and senior residents of hospital Dr Tania Dr Harleen and Dr and clinical psychologist from GMC Mr khurshid and Mr Amir also participated along with teachers students and civil society members

In continuation of the 100 Days Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan in Jammu and Kashmir, Government Medical College Handwara organized a comprehensive awareness programme on 27th April 2026 under the banner of Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan.

As part of the initiative, a rally on Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan was conducted from Bye Road Handwara to Associated Hospital GMC Handwara. The rally was led by , Principal Government Medical College Handwara, and witnessed enthusiastic participation from staff and the general public.

The programme aimed to sensitize the community about the serious health, social, and economic consequences of substance abuse, while promoting a culture of prevention, early intervention, and collective responsibility.

During the event, participants were educated about the ill effects of drug addiction, including its impact on physical and mental health, family dynamics, and society at large. The initiative also encouraged individuals, particularly the youth, to adopt a healthy and drug-free lifestyle.
