🧬 Pregnant? You may have heard of NIPT—but do you actually need it?
NIPT (Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing) is a prenatal screening blood test that can assess the chance of certain chromosomal conditions in the baby, including:
✨ Down syndrome (Trisomy 21)
✨ Edwards syndrome (Trisomy 18)
✨ Patau syndrome (Trisomy 13)
One of the biggest advantages? It only requires a blood sample from the mother and can generally be done from around 10 weeks of pregnancy.
But there’s one important thing to remember:
⚠️ NIPT is a screening test, NOT a diagnostic test.
A high-risk result does not automatically mean that the baby has the condition. Your doctor may recommend further assessment or diagnostic testing.
So, should every pregnant woman have NIPT?
Not necessarily. The decision depends on factors such as your pregnancy history, age, ultrasound findings, previous screening results and your individual risk profile.
📌 Save this post if you’re planning a pregnancy or are currently pregnant—you may want to refer back to it later.
If you’re wondering when NIPT should be done, whether you need it, or how to understand your NIPT report, discuss it with your gynaecologist/obstetrician.
