CME on Advances in Pain Medicine at Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences, Lucknow
A Continuing Medical Education (CME) program on Advances in Pain Medicine was successfully conducted on 9th May 2026 at Dr RMLIMS, Lucknow, bringing together experts from across India to deliberate on evolving strategies for the management of chronic pain syndromes.
The CME was organized under the patronage of the Director, Prof. C. M. Singh, and was graced by Prof. Pradyuman Singh (Dean), Prof. Vikram Singh (CMS), and Prof. Subrat Chandra (Registrar). Dr. Maj. Pankaj Surange, Dean of the Indian Academy of Pain Medicine, New Delhi, attended as the Guest of Honour. Eminent national faculty included Dr. Sidhartha Verma (D. Y. Patil University, Mumbai) and Dr. Sanjog Makewer (Pune).
Scientific deliberations highlighted the paradigm shift toward precision-based, minimally invasive approaches in pain care, aimed at improving patient function while reducing long-term medication dependence. Key discussions focused on advanced Minimally Invasive Pain & Spine Interventions (MIPSIs), including neuromodulation techniques such as spinal cord stimulation for conditions like failed back surgery syndrome and neuropathic pain.
Vertebral augmentation procedures—vertebroplasty and balloon kyphoplasty—were emphasized as effective treatments for osteoporotic and malignant vertebral compression fractures, enabling rapid pain relief, early mobilization, and partial restoration of spinal alignment. Experts also elaborated on a wide spectrum of MIPSI techniques including targeted epidural MIPSIs, Radiofrequency treatment, Pain Biological or Regenerative Therapies, Percutaneous Spine Endoscopy and Permanent Intrathecal Pump Implants systems.
The CME underscored the expanding role of Pain Physicians in delivering comprehensive care, as Pain Medicine emerges as a vital super-specialty addressing the growing burden of chronic pain as a major non-communicable disease.
The event was organized in collaboration with the Indian Society for Study of Pain. It was noted with pride that Prof. Anurag Agarwal, Professor of Anaesthesiology and Pain Physician at Dr RMLIMS, currently serves as the National Secretary of ISSP.
Organizing Chairman Prof. P. K. Das (Head, Department of Anaesthesiology) informed that the institute has applied to the National Medical Commission for starting a DM program in Pain Medicine. Prof. Shivani Rastogi, Organizing Secretary and In-charge, Pain Medicine Unit, highlighted that with strong institutional support, the unit is delivering advanced patient care while actively strengthening training programs in Pain Medicine.
The success of the CME was made possible with the valuable contributions of colleagues includingProf. Deepak Kumar (HOD Orthopaedics), Prof. Dinkar Kulshrestha (Neurology), Dr. Sujeet Gautam (SGPGIMS), Dr. Manish Singh (KGMU), Dr. Devendra Singh, and former PDCC Pain Medicine fellows—Dr. Brahaspati Tiwari, Dr. Shubhendu Singh, Dr. Pratibha Yadav, and Dr. Aleem.
In a significant academic milestone, the institute will welcome two Fellows of the National Board (FNB) Pain Medicine trainees this year for a structured two-year training program in Pain Medicine—marking one of the first such initiatives in a government medical college in Northern India.
