QUITTING IS MORE THAN WILLPOWER
Dr R K Thukral, neuropsychiatrist, says smoking cessation is rarely as simple as replacing one ni****ne product with another.
According to him, the motivations behind quitting often differ across age groups.
“Regular smokers above 60 usually come because of health complications, while younger adults between 25 and 30 often try to quit due to spouse or family pressure,” he says.
Dr Thukral recommends methods such as cold turkey cessation, group therapy and behavioural counselling models, including the ‘5A’ approach — Ask, Advise, Assess, Assist and Arrange follow-up.
Ni****ne replacement therapies such as chewing gums and transdermal patches can sometimes help manage withdrawal symptoms. However, Dr Thukral says these are intended to function only as “short-term bridging tools, not permanent substitutes.”
“The medicines used in smoking cessation are psychiatric medicines which require strict supervision and prescription,” he adds.
