Today we want to take a moment to remember the immense struggles and sacrifices of the Girmitiya laborers. Millions of our ancestors from UP and Bihar were taken across the oceans to far off lands like Mauritius, Fiji, South Africa, and the Caribbean. Many were misled by recruiters with false promises of a better life, only to face unimaginable hardships on the sugarcane plantations.
​The long journey across the dark waters was filled with pain and fear. When they finally arrived, they were subjected to brutal working conditions, extremely long hours, and forced separation from their loved ones. Their true identity and names were often erased and reduced to mere numbers on an official emigration pass.
​Yet, despite all this exploitation and suffering, they never gave up. They held tightly onto their rich culture, their language, and their faith. They survived the harshest conditions and built new lives from the ground up for their future generations.
​At India Ancestry Research, we deeply respect this painful but inspiring history. Every time we trace a family back to their ancestral village, it feels like we are bringing a lost piece of their heart back home.
