"My pregnancy test is positive. My family says I should wait three months before seeing a doctor. Is that right?"

This is one of the most common myths surrounding early pregnancy.

The first trimester is the most crucial phase of pregnancy. As soon as your pregnancy test is positive, schedule your first antenatal visit. An early ultrasound is important to confirm that the pregnancy is inside the uterus, determine the baby's growth and rule out conditions like ectopic pregnancy, which require immediate medical attention.

Your doctor will also recommend essential blood tests to check your hemoglobin, thyroid function and overall health, and start folic acid, which is vital for your baby's brain and spinal cord development. Delaying these steps can mean missing the opportunity to prevent certain birth defects.

Another common misconception is that pregnant women should avoid all household work. In a normal pregnancy, gentle daily activities are not only safe but beneficial. Unless your doctor has advised otherwise, staying active is encouraged. Prolonged bed rest without a medical reason can actually worsen problems like constipation, acidity and nausea.

Don't let myths delay the care that you and your baby deserve.

"The red iron tablet is causing acidity, gas and constipation. Can I stop taking it?"

This is one of the most common concerns during pregnancy.
Iron supplements are essential because they help prevent and treat anemia, a condition that can affect both the mother's health and the baby's growth. During pregnancy, hemoglobin levels need to be maintained adequately to support the increased demands of both mother and baby.

The challenge is that iron tablets can sometimes cause:
- Acidity and stomach irritation
- Nausea
- Constipation
- Black-colored stools

The good news? These side effects do not mean you should stop iron on your own.
Simple measures such as taking iron after a light meal, combining it with Vitamin C-rich foods like lemon water or citrus fruits, staying well hydrated and increasing fresh fruits in your diet can often make iron much easier to tolerate.
If one brand of iron causes discomfort, your doctor may switch to a different formulation. In some cases, when oral iron is not tolerated or hemoglobin remains low, IV iron therapy may be recommended.

Remember: black stools after taking iron are usually normal and simply indicate that the supplement is being processed by the body.
The goal is not just treating today's hemoglobin level, but ensuring a safer pregnancy and delivery for both mother and baby.

"It's just pregnancy nausea"... or is it something more?

Nausea and vomiting are common in the first trimester and affect most pregnant women. But when vomiting becomes so severe that you cannot keep food or water down, feel dizzy, weak, dehydrated or start losing weight, it may be a condition called Hyperemesis Gravidarum.
This is not something to ignore.

Severe vomiting during pregnancy can lead to dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, nutritional deficiencies and may even affect your baby's growth if left untreated. In some cases, hospitalization and IV fluids may be required to stabilize the mother.

The good news is that safe and effective pregnancy-friendly treatments are available. Early medical attention can help control symptoms, prevent complications and keep both mother and baby healthy.

If you are experiencing persistent vomiting, dark urine, excessive weakness, dizziness or are unable to tolerate fluids, please consult your doctor without delay.

Pregnancy discomfort is common. Severe dehydration is not.

Yet, through trust, patience and teamwork, she welcomed a healthy baby boy into the world after a gap of more than five years.

What touched me most was not just her kind words, but the faith she placed in me throughout those nine months. A doctor can prescribe medicines, but it is trust that truly carries a pregnancy journey forward.

Congratulations to this beautiful family on completing their family and beginning a wonderful new chapter together. May your little prince bring endless joy, laughter and love into your lives.

Postpartum Nutrition: Who Is Taking Care of the Mother?

Once a baby arrives, all eyes are on the newborn. But what about the mother?
Unfortunately, many new mothers are still advised restrictive diets based on myths rather than science. Living on only khichdi, porridge or excessive amounts of ghee and laddoos can actually deprive the body of the nutrients it needs to recover from childbirth and support breastfeeding.

After delivery, a mother's nutritional needs increase significantly.

- Eat three regular meals along with healthy snacks and small meals in between.
- Include protein-rich foods such as dals, eggs, paneer, tofu, fish and lean meats to support healing and milk production.
- Calcium is essential during breastfeeding. Milk, curd, buttermilk, paneer and ragi can help maintain bone health and replenish calcium stores.
- Iron-rich foods such as spinach, dates and jaggery are important, especially after blood loss during delivery.
- Stay well hydrated with water, coconut water and fresh fluids.
- Nuts and seeds are healthy, but moderation is key. Excessive dry fruits and ghee may worsen constipation and acidity.
- There is no need to avoid nutritious vegetables or curd because of common household myths.

At the same time, try to limit excessive caffeine, soft drinks and highly processed foods.
A healthy mother is the foundation of a healthy baby. Postpartum recovery is not about eating less. It is about eating right.

One scan. A lifetime of impact.

The Anomaly Ultrasound, also known as the Level-II scan, is one of the most important scans of pregnancy. Performed between 18–22 weeks, it provides a detailed assessment of your baby's developing organs and helps us ensure that growth is progressing as expected.

During this scan, we carefully evaluate the baby's:

- Brain and spine
- Heart
- Face and limbs
- Kidneys and stomach
- Placenta and amniotic fluid

The purpose of an anomaly scan is to identify major structural abnormalities, detect certain markers that may require further evaluation and help plan timely medical care when needed.
Some congenital abnormalities that cannot be treated may also be detected during this scan.

In such situations, parents are given the opportunity to understand the condition, seek appropriate counselling and discuss available options. Early detection is especially important because, if a severe untreatable anomaly is identified, medical termination of pregnancy can be considered within the legal framework and under proper medical guidance. This is one of the reasons why the anomaly scan is considered so crucial and should never be missed.

A normal anomaly scan is highly reassuring, but it is important to remember that no test can detect 100% of conditions. Some abnormalities may develop later in pregnancy or require additional investigations.

The good news? The scan is safe, painless and non-invasive, using sound waves and not radiation.

If you are expecting, make sure you do not miss this crucial milestone in your pregnancy journey. Early information helps us make better decisions for both mother and baby.

The first 12 weeks can shape the next 9 months.

Pregnancy is a beautiful journey, but the first trimester is when your baby's brain, heart, spine and other vital organs begin to form. That's why these weeks deserve extra care and attention.

✓ Register your pregnancy early and don't delay your first ultrasound.

✓ Get your recommended blood tests done, including thyroid profile, blood group, hemoglobin and glucose screening.

✓ Eat small, frequent meals to manage nausea and maintain energy levels.

✓ Take your prescribed supplements regularly. Folic acid, iron, calcium, Vitamin D and other nutrients play a crucial role in your baby's growth and development.

✓ Stay active unless your doctor has specifically advised otherwise. Gentle walks, yoga and routine daily activities are usually beneficial.

Most importantly, know your danger signs. Bleeding, severe abdominal pain, foul-smelling discharge, fever, burning while passing urine or persistent cramping should never be ignored.

A little awareness in the first trimester can go a long way in protecting both mother and baby.

First Trimester: The Most Important 12 Weeks of Pregnancy

Did you know that most pregnancy losses occur during the first trimester?

One of the reasons is that many women are unaware of the precautions they need to take during these crucial weeks. The first three months are when your baby's brain, spine, heart and other vital organs begin to develop. This is the foundation stage of pregnancy.

Here are some important first-trimester essentials:

Do not ignore folic acid. Ideally, it should be started before conception, but if you've just discovered you're pregnant, consult your doctor and begin supplementation as early as possible.

Do not skip your first ultrasound. Contrary to popular myths, early pregnancy scans are safe and extremely important. They help confirm the baby's location, growth, viability and can detect conditions such as ectopic pregnancy or threatened miscarriage early.

Avoid self-medication. Not all medicines are safe during pregnancy. Certain painkillers, antibiotics and supplements can affect your baby's development or increase the risk of complications.

Be careful with food choices. Avoid unpasteurized dairy products, raw or undercooked meat and eggs, as they may carry infections that can harm both mother and baby.

Review all supplements with your doctor. Even vitamins are not always harmless. Excessive doses of certain supplements, such as Vitamin A, can affect fetal development.

The first trimester may seem quiet from the outside, but inside, your baby's most important developmental milestones are taking place.

So be well informed!

When we think of pregnancy ultrasounds, we usually imagine seeing the baby's face, tiny hands or hearing the heartbeat. But sometimes, what matters even more is something we cannot see with the naked eye: the baby's blood flow.

An Obstetric Doppler Ultrasound is a specialized scan that assesses how well blood is flowing from the mother to the placenta and from the placenta to the baby. This helps us determine whether your baby is receiving enough oxygen and nutrients to grow safely.

A Doppler scan is often recommended in high-risk pregnancies, such as those complicated by high blood pressure, gestational diabetes, fetal growth restriction (IUGR), low amniotic fluid, twin pregnancies or reduced fetal movements.

One important thing to remember is that an abnormal Doppler report does not always mean your baby is in immediate danger. It tells us that the pregnancy needs closer monitoring so that we can make timely decisions and intervene if required.

In modern obstetrics, Doppler ultrasound is one of our most valuable tools for protecting both mother and baby. Early detection of reduced blood flow can make all the difference.

Swipe through the carousel to understand how Doppler ultrasound works, when it is recommended and why it plays such a crucial role in ensuring a safe pregnancy.
