Open Your Eyes to Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)

Deep vein thrombosis or DVT, is a blood clot that forms in a vein deep in the body. Blood clots occur when something slows or changes the blood flow. Blood thickens and clumps together.

Most deep vein blood clots occur in the lower leg or thigh, however, they can also occur in other parts of the body such as the groin and arms.

A blood clot in a deep vein can break off and travel through the bloodstream. The loose clot is called an embolus. It can travel to an artery in the lungs and block blood flow. This condition is called pulmonary embolism, or PE, a very serious condition. Remember, DVT + PE = VTE.

Cervical Ribs: A commonly overlooked cause of upper limb ischemia.
A 65 year old lady presented with right upper limb ischemia and bilateral cervical ribs. She was undertaken for an embolectomy followed by a staged procedure for removal of her cervical rib. It is a very delicate yet satisfying surgery with excellent outcomes.

The vascular unit was started in 2008, making the oldest vascular surgery unit in the state. Over the past 14 years our vascular surgical unit has performed a number of open and endovascular procedures. We offer a full range of services from a variety of new, minimally invasive endovascular procedures to open surgical procedures. We are available 24X7 on OPD, IPD and emergency basis. Currently the department is performing close to 1000 surgeries per year.
