World Tuberculosis Day is observed every year on March 24 to commemorate the discovery of the tuberculosis bacillus by Robert Koch in 1882. This day serves as a reminder of the ongoing fight against tuberculosis (TB), a disease that remains a significant public health challenge globally.

Despite being preventable and treatable, tuberculosis is still one of the leading infectious killers worldwide. Millions of new cases are reported each year, especially in developing countries like India. Factors such as poverty, malnutrition, overcrowding, and co-infection with HIV contribute to its persistence.

Tuberculosis is caused by the bacteria Mycobacterium tuberculosis, primarily affecting the lungs but can also involve other organs. It spreads through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Common symptoms include a persistent cough lasting more than two weeks, fever, night sweats, weight loss, fatigue, and in advanced cases, coughing up blood.

Early diagnosis and prompt treatment are essential for controlling TB. Diagnostic tools include sputum microscopy, chest X-rays, and culture methods. Treatment typically involves a multi-drug regimen under national programs. It's crucial for patients to adhere to their treatment to prevent drug resistance, including multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB).

Prevention strategies include vaccinating children with the BCG vaccine, early detection and treatment of active cases, contact tracing, improving nutrition and living conditions, and promoting respiratory hygiene in high-risk settings.

India aims to eliminate TB by 2025, ahead of the global goal. The government has launched initiatives for free diagnosis and treatment, nutritional support through programs like Nikshay Poshan Yojana, and digital tracking systems.

Each year, World TB Day has a specific theme that emphasizes the urgency of addressing TB. It calls on governments, healthcare professionals, and communities to work together to eliminate this disease. Healthcare professionals play a crucial role in suspecting and diagnosing TB early, ensuring patients adhere to treatment, educating communities, and reporting cases to national programs.
