Why are we wired to chase 'more' when our souls actually crave 'less'?"
Hello everyone, this is Neeraj Ahuja, a qualified hypnotherapist and mental wellness expert from Bhopal.
In my practice, I often see people caught in an endless cycle of "more." We want more money, more followers, more achievements, and more possessions. But have you ever wondered why our subconscious is so resistant to the idea of "less"?
The Survival Blueprint
Historically, our brains are wired for survival, not necessarily for happiness. To our ancestors, "more" meant safety. More food meant surviving the winter; more social status meant better protection. Today, though we live in a world of abundance, our subconscious still operates on that ancient software. It perceives "less" as a threat—a sign of scarcity or losing our place in the tribe.
The Hedonic Treadmill
There is also a psychological phenomenon called Hedonic Adaptation. When we get something new, we feel a "dopamine hit" of joy. However, that feeling quickly fades as the new thing becomes the "new normal." To get that same high again, we feel we need even more. We aren't actually chasing the object; we are chasing the chemical spike in our brain.
Choosing "Less" is a Mindset Shift
The reason so few people want "less" is because choosing less requires us to confront the "Micro-Inputs" of modern society—the constant advertisements and social comparisons that tell us we aren't as good as we are.
Choosing less isn't about deprivation; it’s about intentionality. In hypnotherapy, we work on shifting the focus from external accumulation to internal fulfillment. When you realize that your worth isn't tied to your "more," you gain a level of freedom that possessions can never provide.
True mental wellness comes when we stop filling the void with things and start filling it with presence. Sometimes, "less" is exactly what we need to feel "more" alive.
