"2 out of every 5 lung cancer patients at M.I.O have never smoked."

Most people assume lung cancer is a smoker's disease. Dr. Hemanth Kumar, Medical Oncologist at M.I.O, says otherwise and he sees it every week.

A cough that stays longer than two weeks. Breathlessness. Blood in sputum. These are signs most people explain away. Most patients who come to him late noticed something they just didn't know it mattered.

Lung cancer is also being seen increasingly among women, non-smokers, and the elderly. The disease does not fit the profile most people expect.

And here is what has changed: a diagnosis of lung cancer today is not what it was. Targeted therapy and immunotherapy have replaced chemotherapy as the primary approach for many patients. There is more reason for hope than ever before.

But early detection is still everything.

Watch Dr. Hemanth Kumar explain what to watch for and why coming in early changes everything.

If this video made you think of someone, share it with them. 🀍

Today is World Lung Cancer Day.

We have been thinking about what to say.

Not statistics. Not warnings. Just something we have seen, over and over, in the years we have been treating patients here at MIO.

The people who come to us early, we have more time together. More options. More of what matters.

This poster is for the people in your life who should know the signs. A parent. A partner. A friend who keeps putting things off.

Share it with them. That is all we are asking today. 🀍

"Replace fear with knowledge."

That is what Dr. D Suresh Rao, Director, Mangalore Institute of Oncology, is asking all of us to do today, on World Head and Neck Cancer Day. πŸ’™

India is, unfortunately, the capital of head and neck cancers. And the main reasons are habits we see every day around us. To***co. Alcohol. Poor oral hygiene. Not being vaccinated against HPV.

These habits do not cause pain immediately. They work slowly, quietly, over years. And by the time something shows up, it has usually been building for a long time.

Dr. Suresh Rao's message today is this: if you are above 40, and especially if you have any of these habits, watch for these symptoms and do not ignore them.

πŸ”΄ Throat pain that does not go away
πŸ”΄ Ear pain without any obvious reason
πŸ”΄ An ulcer or sore in the mouth not healing in 2 weeks
πŸ”΄ A swelling in the neck

And please act immediately. Because in oncology, two weeks is a big time. A Stage 1 cancer left unattended for three months can become Stage 3. Treatment at Stage 3 is very different from treatment at Stage 1.

If you have these symptoms, visit a doctor and rule out cancer. And if it is cancer, catching it early means it is completely curable. πŸ’™

Please share this with the people in your life, especially anyone above 40 with these habits. It could be the most important message they receive today.

Today is World Head and Neck Cancer Day. And our doctors at M.I.O want to explain something that most people do not realise: these habits do not hurt immediately. They work slowly, over years. You notice nothing for a long time. And that is exactly what makes them dangerous.

Here is what happens over time:

In the early years, there is repeated irritation of the mouth, throat and larynx lining. You feel nothing.

Between years 5 and 10, pre-cancerous patches may appear inside the mouth. White or red. Usually painless. Often ignored.

After 10 or more years, those abnormal cells can become cancer. But here is the important part: even at this stage, if it is caught now, it is still often curable.

Five signs to watch for in yourself or someone you love:

1.A white or red patch inside the mouth that has not gone away in 3 weeks
2. A lump or swelling in the neck that is painless but persistent
3. Voice becoming hoarse or changing without a cold or infection
4. Difficulty or discomfort while swallowing, getting worse over time
5. A mouth sore or ulcer that has not healed in 3 weeks

And the number that matters most: head and neck cancers caught at Stage 1 or Stage 2 have an 80 to 90% survival rate.

A screening at M.I.O is one visit. One examination. No complicated procedure. If everything is fine, you leave with certainty. If something needs attention, you leave with a plan.

Please share this with the people in your life who need to see it. You do not have to say anything. Just send it. πŸ’™

Today is World Head and Neck Cancer Day. And we want to use it to say one thing clearly. πŸ’™

Head and neck cancers are among the most treatable cancers in the world. When found early.

That is not a small thing. It means that a person who comes to us at the right time has a very real chance of a full recovery. But it also means that every month of delay matters. Every symptom ignored narrows those chances.

So today we are asking you to pay attention. To yourself and to the people around you.

Watch out for these signs:
πŸ”΄ A lump in the neck or throat that does not go away
πŸ”΄ A sore throat or hoarseness lasting more than three weeks
πŸ”΄ Difficulty swallowing that keeps getting worse
πŸ”΄ A mouth ulcer or white or red patch that has not healed in three weeks
πŸ”΄ Unexplained weight loss alongside any of these

These are not things to wait on. These are things to get checked.

Head and neck cancers are very common in India, particularly in coastal Karnataka, where to***co and betel nut use are widespread. If you or someone you know uses to***co in any form, the risk is higher. And the need to get checked is even more urgent.

At M.I.O, we see and treat head and neck cancers every single day. Our specialists are here. Come early. πŸ’™

On International Self-Care Day, our care team at M.I.O wants to say something directly to every patient and caregiver reading this. πŸ’™

Self-care during cancer is not something you do when you have time. It is part of your treatment. And here are 5 things that actually help.

πŸ’€ Sleep like it is medicine.
Your body does its most important repair work during deep sleep. Immune response. Cell recovery. Disrupted sleep during chemotherapy slows all of that down and makes fatigue worse. If you are not sleeping well, please tell your care team. It is a symptom worth addressing, not something to push through.

🍽️ Eat to support treatment, not just to feel full.
Protein supports tissue repair. Small frequent meals manage nausea better than three big ones. Hydration is non-negotiable during chemotherapy. You do not need to eat perfectly. You need to eat consistently. Our dietitian at M.I.O can build a personalised plan for you.

🚢 Move gently. It still counts.
Short walks. Gentle yoga. Light stretching. Even 10 to 15 minutes a day reduces treatment-related fatigue and improves your mood. The goal is not fitness. The goal is staying in motion. Always check with your oncologist before starting anything new.

🧠 Your mental health is part of your treatment.
Counselling, journalling, and breathing exercises reduce the stress hormones that affect recovery. Asking for help from your family, your care team, or a counsellor is not weakness. It is the most practical thing you can do. M.I.O offers counselling support alongside oncology treatment. Just ask your care team to connect you.

You do not have to be strong all the time. Healing includes the hard days too. πŸ’™

Please save this post and share it with someone going through cancer treatment right now. It might be exactly what they needed to read today.

To every patient going through cancer treatment right now. And to every caregiver sitting beside them. This post is for you. πŸ’™

Today is International Self-Care Day. And we want to use it to say something that does not get said enough in oncology:
Taking care of yourself is not separate from fighting cancer. It is part of it.
Rest matters. When your body is exhausted and you push through anyway, you are not being strong. You are making an already hard journey harder. Rest is when your body heals.
Food matters. What you eat during treatment affects how you feel, how you tolerate medication, and how quickly you recover. It is not a lifestyle choice. It is medicine.
Movement matters. Even gentle walking. Even stretching. Keeping your body active, at whatever level you can manage, supports your treatment and your mood.
And asking for help matters most of all. So many patients and caregivers carry everything alone because they do not want to be a burden. Please ask. Let the people who love you show up for you.
None of these things are extras. They are part of the treatment plan. And they deserve the same attention as any medication or procedure.

Take care of yourself today. And every day. πŸ’™

This is what health education looks like when it is done right. πŸ’™
The M.I.O team visited Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayath Higher Primary School, Padavu, Bikarnakatte as part of our ongoing Healthy Hero programme. And from the moment we walked in, it was clear this was going to be something special.
No boring lectures. No dry presentations.
Instead the children got skits from our team showing healthy food habits and lifestyle choices. They got dance sessions and movement exercises that showed them that staying fit can actually be fun. They raised their hands and took the Health Hero Pledge, committing to be the health captains of their own homes. Nimma maneya aarogya nayakaragiri. And every child walked out proudly holding a Healthy Hero Certificate.
Our Director Dr. D Suresh Rao built this programme on one belief: health education needs to reach the grassroots. Children in government schools, who are often overlooked, are exactly the ones who need this the most. Because when a child learns something, they take it home. They tell their parents. They tell their siblings. One session in a school can quietly change the health habits of an entire family.
That is the power of catching them young.
If you know a school in Mangalore, Udupi, or anywhere in Karnataka that should be part of this programme, please reach out to us. We want to be there. πŸ’™
