Growing Pains in Children – What Parents Should Know

As an orthopaedic surgeon, one of the most common concerns I hear from parents is: β€œMy child complains of leg pain at night. Is something wrong?”

In many cases, this may be growing pains, a common and harmless condition seen in children between 3 and 12 years of age.
βœ… Typical Features of Growing Pains
β€’ Pain is usually felt in both legs, especially the calves, thighs, or behind the knees.
β€’ Often occurs in the evening or at night and may wake the child from sleep.
β€’ The child is usually completely normal and active during the day.
β€’ There is no swelling, redness, fever, or limping.
β€’ Gentle massage, warmth, and reassurance often provide relief.
❗ When Should Parents Seek Medical Advice?
If the pain is persistent, affects only one leg, causes limping, is associated with swelling, fever, weight loss, or occurs during the day, a medical evaluation is important.
πŸ’‘ Key Message
Growing pains are not caused by growth itself and do not damage the bones or joints. Most children outgrow the condition completely with time.
πŸ‘¨β€βš•οΈ Remember: A child who is active, healthy, and pain-free by morning most often has a benign condition, but any unusual symptoms should be assessed by a healthcare professional.

Your immune system is supposed to protect you.

But in *Rheumatoid Arthritis*, it mistakenly attacks your own joints instead.

Morning stiffness, swollen fingers, pain in BOTH joints, fatigue β€” these are NOT β€œnormal body pains.”

Early treatment can prevent permanent joint damage.

Don’t ignore the warning signs.

The Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) is one of the key stabilizers of the knee β€” and one of the most commonly injured ligaments, especially in sports.

⚑ How it happens:
Sudden pivoting, twisting, landing awkwardly, or rapid direction changes.

⚠️ Signs of an ACL injury:
β€’ A β€œpop” sound at the time of injury
β€’ Immediate swelling
β€’ Knee instability or β€œgiving way”
β€’ Difficulty returning to activity

πŸ₯ Management:
Depends on activity level and instability β€” ranging from structured rehabilitation to ACL reconstruction surgery for active individuals.

πŸ’‘ Early diagnosis and timely treatment are crucial for restoring knee stability and preventing further damage like meniscus # or cartilage injury.

Move smart. Train strong. Protect your knees.
