🍎 Do Women with PCOS Need to Avoid Fruits?

One of the biggest misconceptions about PCOS is that fruits should be completely avoided because they contain sugar.

The reality is different.

Whole fruits contain natural sugars along with fibre, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that support overall health. The fibre present in fruits helps slow the absorption of sugar, making them a healthier choice compared to processed sugary foods.

What should be limited?
• Fruit juices
• Packaged juices
• Sweetened smoothies
• Processed foods with added sugars

These options often contain concentrated sugars and less fibre, which can contribute to rapid blood sugar fluctuations.

PCOS-friendly fruits may include:
• Apple 🍎
• Guava 🍈
• Orange 🍊
• Pear 🍐
• Berries 🫐

When consumed in appropriate portions as part of a balanced diet, these fruits can be included in a healthy PCOS management plan.

Managing PCOS is not about unnecessarily restricting nutritious foods.
It's about making informed dietary choices that support hormonal balance, metabolic health, and long-term wellbeing.

At Thulasi Ayurveda Hospital, Alanallur, we focus on personalized approaches to women's health, hormonal wellness, and PCOS management through lifestyle guidance and Ayurvedic care.

Pain while lifting your arm sideways?

If you can lift your arm initially without pain, experience pain in the middle range of movement, and then notice the pain reduces once the arm goes above shoulder level, it may not be a normal shoulder pain.

This pattern can be a sign of Shoulder Impingement Syndrome.

Shoulder Impingement Syndrome occurs when the tendons or soft tissues of the shoulder become compressed between the shoulder bones during movement.
Repeated overhead activities, poor posture, inflammation, muscle imbalance, or age-related changes can reduce the available space within the shoulder joint, causing pain and irritation.

Common symptoms may include:
• Pain while lifting the arm sideways
• Pain during the middle range of shoulder movement
• Difficulty reaching overhead
• Pain while dressing or combing hair
• Shoulder weakness during daily activities
• Night pain or discomfort while sleeping on the affected side

Early diagnosis is important because untreated inflammation can gradually lead to tendon damage, restricted mobility, and in some cases, bony changes that may require surgical management.

Depending on the stage of the condition, treatment approaches may include:

Early inflammatory stage:
• Icing therapy
• Lepam (Ayurvedic external applications)
• Inflammation management

Intermediate stage:
• Dhara therapy
• Pain and mobility-focused treatments
• Rehabilitation support

Advanced stage:
• If significant bony growths or structural changes develop, surgical intervention may be considered based on specialist evaluation.

Persistent shoulder pain should never be ignored.
Consulting a qualified doctor early can help prevent progression and improve recovery outcomes.

If you have back pain, stop doing this.

One of the most common mistakes people make is bending directly from the waist to pick up objects from the floor.

Repeated improper bending can place excessive stress on the lower back, particularly the L4-L5 and L5-S1 spinal segments, which are common areas affected by disc-related problems and chronic back pain.

Instead of bending your back:
• Bend your knees first
• Keep your back as straight as possible
• Use the strength of your legs to lift
• Keep the object close to your body while lifting

This simple habit can help reduce unnecessary strain on the spine and lower the risk of back injuries.

Back pain is often the result of small daily habits repeated over time.
Correct posture and proper lifting techniques play a major role in protecting your spine and maintaining long-term back health.

If you experience persistent lower back pain, stiffness, or pain radiating to the legs, consult a qualified doctor for proper evaluation and treatment.

Have you heard about PMOS?

Many healthcare professionals are now referring to PCOS as PMOS — Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome.

Why the change?

Because this condition is not limited to the ovaries alone.

PMOS/PCOS can affect multiple systems in the body, including:
• Hormonal balance
• Metabolism
• Insulin resistance
• Weight management
• Menstrual health
• Skin and hair health
• Fertility and reproductive wellness

The term "Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome" often led people to believe that the condition is only related to ovarian cysts.

However, not every woman diagnosed with PCOS has ovarian cysts.

The term PMOS better reflects the true nature of the condition — a complex hormonal and metabolic disorder that requires a comprehensive approach to management.

Common signs may include:
• Irregular periods
• Weight gain or difficulty losing weight
• Acne and oily skin
• Excess facial hair growth
• Hair thinning or hair fall
• Difficulty conceiving

While the terminology may evolve, one fact remains unchanged:
Early diagnosis, proper medical guidance, healthy lifestyle habits, and timely treatment are essential for long-term health and wellbeing.

At Thulasi Ayurveda Hospital, Alanallur, personalized Ayurvedic care focuses on supporting hormonal balance, metabolic health, menstrual wellness, and overall quality of life.

Back pain with difficulty standing straight or walking bent forward?

It may not be just a normal back pain.
In some cases, pain that starts from the lower back and radiates down through the hip or leg may be related to Sciatica.

Sciatica occurs when the sciatic nerve — the largest nerve in the body — becomes irritated or compressed, commonly due to conditions like disc problems, muscle tightness, inflammation, or spinal changes.

Common symptoms may include:
• Lower back pain radiating to the leg
• Burning or shooting pain
• Tingling or numbness in the leg
• Difficulty walking or standing straight
• Pain that worsens while sitting or bending

Many people assume surgery is the only option for sciatica.
However, depending on the condition and severity, Ayurvedic management may help reduce pain, inflammation, muscle tightness, and nerve compression without surgery.

At Thulasi Ayurveda Hospital, treatment approaches may include:
• Ayurvedic therapies for pain and inflammation management
• Muscle relaxation and mobility-focused treatments
• Therapies designed to support nerve health and recovery
• Personalized treatment plans based on the patient’s condition

Ignoring sciatica symptoms can gradually affect mobility and quality of life.
Early consultation and proper treatment are important to avoid worsening complications.

Shoulder pain while lifting your arm, combing your hair, reaching overhead, or turning during sleep?

Pain in the front, side, or back of the shoulder is not always “normal muscle pain.”
In many cases, it may be related to shoulder bursitis or inflammatory shoulder conditions such as frozen shoulder.

Shoulder bursitis happens when the bursa — a small fluid-filled cushioning sac around the shoulder joint — becomes irritated or inflamed.
Repeated strain, poor posture, overuse, injury, or inflammation can increase friction inside the shoulder joint, leading to pain and restricted movement.

Common signs may include:
• Pain in the front, lateral, or rear shoulder area
• Pain while reaching overhead
• Difficulty combing hair or dressing
• Pain while lifting objects
• Shoulder discomfort while sleeping or turning in bed
• Reduced shoulder mobility and stiffness

In Ayurveda, treatments are selected based on the stage and severity of inflammation and stiffness.
Cooling and inflammation-reducing therapies such as:
• Lepam
• Dhara therapy
• Icing and supportive care
are commonly used to help reduce swelling, pain, and movement restriction.

Internal Ayurvedic medicines such as Kashayam may also be advised to support recovery and inflammation management.

Ignoring persistent shoulder pain can gradually worsen mobility and may lead to conditions like frozen shoulder.
Early diagnosis and proper treatment from an experienced doctor are important for better recovery.

Stop doing this the moment you wake up with back pain.

If you wake up with severe lower back stiffness or pain, avoid suddenly sitting straight up from bed or doing heavy oil massages immediately.
In Ayurveda, acute stiffness and inflammation can sometimes be associated with “Ama” — a condition where improper metabolism and inflammation lead to blockage and pain.

What NOT to do:
• Don’t jump or crunch straight out of bed
• Don’t apply heavy oil massage during acute stiff pain without proper guidance

What you can do instead:
• Turn to your side and get up slowly using elbow support
• Use gentle dry heat such as a hot water bag or warm cloth compression
• Avoid sudden strain on the lower back in the morning

In Ayurveda, therapies focused on reducing stiffness and improving mobility are selected based on the stage and nature of the pain.

Persistent morning back pain should not be ignored.
Early consultation and proper treatment can help prevent worsening discomfort and long-term spinal issues.
