Why should impacted lower wisdom teeth be surgically removed?
Impacted lower third molars should be removed when they are causing disease or are likely to cause future problems. Common reasons include:
* Recurrent gum infection (pericoronitis)
* Tooth decay in the wisdom tooth or adjacent second molar
* Gum disease and bone loss
* Damage (root resorption) to the adjacent tooth
* Cyst or tumor formation (rare)
* Pain, swelling, or recurrent abscess
* Orthodontic or prosthetic treatment needs
Early removal, when indicated, is often easier and helps prevent complications. However, not all impacted wisdom teeth require extraction—asymptomatic, disease-free teeth can often be monitored regularly.
