When can you eat after a Whipple? 🍽️

One of the most common questions after a Whipple or major GI cancer surgery is: “When can the patient start eating?”

The answer is — there is no fixed day.

With modern ERAS (Enhanced Recovery After Surgery) protocols, we aim to restart oral intake early and safely, rather than keeping patients fasting for several days.

Early feeding, when clinically appropriate, can help:
• Maintain nutrition and muscle strength
• Support gut function
• Reduce unnecessary fasting
• Facilitate earlier recovery and mobilisation

However, feeding must always be individualized based on the patient’s condition, bowel function, gastric emptying, nausea/vomiting, drain output and any concern for complications such as anastomotic or pancreatic leak.

👉 ERAS is not “feed everyone early.” It is about giving the right nutrition, at the right time, to the right patient.

After a major cancer surgery, recovery is a process — and safe early feeding is an important part of that journey.

Can pancreatic cancer be operated upon? The answer isn’t always a simple yes or no.

Surgery offers the best chance of cure—but only when the cancer meets certain criteria. The size of the tumor alone does not decide whether surgery is possible. Its relationship with nearby blood vessels, whether it has spread to other organs, and the patient’s overall fitness are equally important.

In this reel, I explain in simple terms how surgeons decide if pancreatic cancer is resectable (operable), borderline resectable, or locally advanced, and why getting evaluated by an experienced GI cancer surgeon is so important.

An early and accurate assessment can make all the difference.

🚨 Pancreatic Cancer: Know the Warning Signs Early

Pancreatic cancer is often called a “silent disease” because symptoms may not appear until it has progressed. Early awareness can make a difference.

⚠️ Common Signs & Symptoms:
• Persistent upper abdominal pain that may radiate to the back
• Unexplained weight loss
• Loss of appetite
• Yellowing of the eyes and skin (jaundice)
• New-onset diabetes, especially after age 50
• Dark urine and pale stools
• Nausea, indigestion, or bloating
• Fatigue and weakness

🏥 Treatment Options:
✅ Surgery (Whipple procedure, distal pancreatectomy, or total pancreatectomy)
✅ Chemotherapy
✅ Radiation therapy
✅ Targeted therapy and immunotherapy (in selected patients)

Early diagnosis offers the best chance for successful treatment. If you experience persistent symptoms, consult a specialist without delay.

Reaching 100+ robotic GI cancer surgeries at Fortis Mohali is more than just a number—it’s a reflection of trust, teamwork, and an unwavering commitment to delivering the best possible care for patients battling cancer.
