We strongly advise you to consult with your medical doctor or a knowledgeable health practitioner before using any essential oils internally to ensure a safe and optimal program for your individual body. When planning to introduce a new essent

ial oil into your healthcare program, test one drop on a small patch of skin first (e.g., on the underside of the forearm). Sensitivity to particular essential oils is highly individual. If the skin feels hot or turns red, this indicates sensitivity, and this essential oil or blend should NOT be used in your healthcare program. Apply a vegetable oil (e.g., olive or almond) to the area, which will dilute the essential oil. Apply only one new essential oil or blend at a time to the patch of skin to determine how your body responds. Wait 30 minutes before testing another new essential oil. DO NOT attempt to self-diagnose or prescribe any natural substances for health conditions that require professional attention. Consult your healthcare professional about any serious disease, medical condition, or injury, or if you are pregnant, nursing, or planning to become pregnant. DO NOT use wild tansy, clary sage, sage, fennel, wintergreen, or hyssop essential oils during pregnancy. Keep essential oils out of reach of children. LATEX E***A BAGS: Do not use essential oils in latex (rubber) e***a bags. Essential oils degrade latex over time. Use essential oils only in silicone, stainless steel, or plastic e***a equipment. Essential oils are powerful and should be used with care. When using the oils at home, follow the guidelines below:

Aromatherapy can be very helpful during pregnancy and labour, but only under qualified guidance. If you are pregnant you are strongly recommended to consult a qualified Aromatherapist. Some oils are stimulants, which may sometimes affect people suffering from epilepsy. Sufferers should seek medical advice before using essential oils. For babies and small children, use in extra-dilute quantities (10 ml base oil to 1-2 drops of essential oil). Lavender and Tea Tree are the two safest oils for children. Unless specifically indicated, do not apply neat oils directly on the skin, as they can cause irritation. For the same reason, it is advisable to give yourself a patch test on a small area of skin when using your own blend. Note that certain drugs, stress, and the menstrual cycle can also affect your sensitivity. Keep oils away from the eyes, and don't rub eyes after handling them. If you should get any in your eyes, wash them out with plenty of fresh water, if the irritation still persists, put a drop of pure vegetable oil in the eyes, and seek medical advice if necessary. Essential oils are flammable, so do not put them on or near a naked flame. Some of the oils are solvents and may damage certain plastics and polished wood and painted surfaces. Never ingest oils, unless under medical instructions. If you are taking homeopathic remedies, check with your practitioner before using essential oils, as it is believed that strong, camphorous aromas can cancel the effects of homeopathic medicine. Do not keep homeopathic medicines and essential oils in the same place

If you suffer from skin and other allergies, use the oils very carefully and patch-test before using widely. If in any doubt at all, consult a qualified Aromatherapist

Sniff your way to good health :
by Sadiqa Nathani
Aromatherapy relies on essential oil or pure extracts from plants to rejuvenate the body and the mind. Essential oils can be inhaled or massaged into the body.

What are carrier oils?
Essential oils are highly concentrated and as a rule should not be applied neat. Instead they should be blended with specific vegetable oils called 'carrier oils'. The best carrier oils are virgin, cold-pressed oils which contain active vitamins and fatty acids and do not have a powerful aroma of their own. These oils do not hinder the pe*******on of essential oils and when massaged on the skin, produce heat, which improves blood circulation, thus helping pe*******on.

Oils often used in aromatherapy: Sweat almond, apricot kernel, hazel nut, olive, avocado, and specialized carrier oils like jojoba, wheat germ and evening primrose.

Storage of essential oil
Essential oils are highly volatile and thus should be stored in dark bottles, in a cool, dry place away from substances that might affect its aroma. Keep the caps tightly closed to avoid evaporation. And when you make your own blend store them in dark glass bottles (never plastic). Shelf life of pure essential oil is two years and blends rarely last more than three months if stored properly.

Using essential oils at home
While a qualified practitioner should treat serious conditions, many common ailments can be relieved safely and effectively at home. With aromatherapy you may soon come to regard essential oils as a vital part of your home first aid kit.

Antiseptic properties:
Many oils have proven antiseptic properties and can be used for first aid and ongoing treatments of cuts, burns, insect bites and bruises, for example: lavender, and tea-tree.

Anti-fungal properties:
Cedarwood and tea-tree can be used in such conditions as athlete's foot, and other fungal infections. Some can be used as an aid in the overall management of more serious conditions such as candida, arthritis, and rheumatism.

Oils for children and the elderly:
Caution should be expressed when using the oils to treat children, elderly and people. The safest oils for them are lavender and tea-tree. Use oils with caution during pregnancy.

Cancer treatment:
Recent research proves that lavender can be used in stronger dilution (1-2 per cent) for cancer patients in a light massage. It helps them physiologically and psychologically. But treatment should not coincide with chemotherapy.

Selecting oils: The sniff test
If you can, sniff essential oils before using them to make sure they appeal to your sense of smell as well as fit your other needs. Essential oils have a powerful aroma, which could cause a strong reaction when you sniff them. The best way to test the scent of an oil is to put a single drop onto a handkerchief and gently inhale.

One word of caution: Never inhale too many oils at the same time as the brain gets fatigued and it may cause nausea and dizziness. Certain oils will be more appropriate to some people than others.

Classification of essential oils
According to their volatility, essential oils are classified into groups: Top Note: Fast-acting, quick to evaporate, most stimulating, and uplifting to mind and body, strong antiseptic, analgesic, expectorant, decongestant. Should be used in small doses and for short duration. Do not use for children and elderly people, pregnant women, or on very sensitive skin.
Middle Note: Moderately volatile, effects digestion, metabolism, and menstruation. Helps to balance the top and base notes. Base Note: Slower to evaporate, they are sedatives and relaxing. When mixed with top notes it helps to hold back the volatility of that oil.

Aromatherapy At Home

Aromatherapy is an excellent natural treatment that uses concentrated, herbal energies in essential oil (pure extracts from plants) in association with massage, friction, inhalation, compresses and baths to heal all kinds of health problems. It rejuvenates the body and uplifts the mind and hence solves problems such as stress, tension, headaches, migraine, acne, hair fall, dandruff, diabetes, arthritis and many more.

The term "Aromatherapy" was coined by a cosmetic chemist, Rene-Maurice Gattefosse, who dedicated his life to research the remarkable healing properties of nature's essential oils. On burning his hand in the lab, Gattefosse thrust it into the nearest cold liquid on his work desk and instantly discovered that the pain reduced. Plus there was no inflammation or scarring whatsoever. He later realised that the liquid was extracted lavender oil!

This discovery got Gattefosse interested, and he dug into further research on the essential oils to discover that they had excellent therapeutic properties.

Hippocrates, the father of medicine, said that the way to health is to have an aromatic bath and scented massage every day. As far back as the fourth century B.C., aromatic oils were used by Egyptians, Romans, Indians, Chinese, Arabs and Babylonians therapeutically.

What are essential oils?
Most of us are already familiar with essential oil in our everyday life, probably without realising it. Each time we add spice to a recipe, put mint chutney on idlis and pakoras or crush a clove of garlic for a salad dressing, we are using essential oils. Many sweets are also flavoured with essential oils or their derivatives.

Essential oils are the most potent form of a plant's aromatic and fragrant materials. They are obtained, usually by distillation or expression, from the flowers, leaves, stems, bark or wood of aromatic plants and trees. There are 300 oils in general use today that have therapeutic properties stretching right from antiseptic, anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-toxic, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory and anti-depressant properties to stimulating, seductive, digestive and deodorising properties.

Individual essential oils may contain many hundreds of chemical components, which all react together in a way impossible to reproduce synthetically.

How essential oils work with body and mind
Aromatherapy is one of the only holistic medicines that take into account the difference in health problems caused due to stress and those that are genuine ailments.
