What you eat matters. But so does what you eat it with.
Most people stress about what they should eat and the nutrients they’re getting.
But here’s the thing: some foods and drinks don’t just provide nutrients. They can influence how well your body absorbs and uses them.
Others may reduce nutrient absorption, increase your body’s nutrient requirements, or contribute to greater losses over time.
For example:
☕ Coffee & black tea + iron-rich meals
Can reduce the absorption of non-heme iron, especially when consumed alongside the meal.
🍸 Alcohol + hydration
Alcohol can contribute to dehydration and increased fluid and electrolyte losses.
🍬 A diet high in refined sugar
Can crowd out more nutrient-dense foods, making it harder to meet your vitamin and mineral needs.
But this doesn’t mean these foods are bad or that you need to eliminate everything you enjoy.
Health isn’t about fear. It’s about informed choices.
Sometimes, a small change is enough:
☕ Have your coffee a little later instead of with an iron-rich breakfast.
🍫 Choose dark chocolate more often than a highly sugary candy when you’re craving something sweet.
🥗 Build meals around nutrient-dense foods and think about how your food combinations and timing can support absorption.
These small decisions may seem insignificant, but they add up over time.
The goal isn’t to eliminate everything you love.
The goal is to give your body more opportunities to absorb, retain and use the nutrients you’re already eating.
Because nutrition isn’t just about what’s on your plate.
It’s also about what your body can actually use. 🤍
