Your pain is always valid. Your feelings and emotions are always valid. You are always valid.

Have there been times when someone tried to apologise by correcting their intention behind something they said? But despite the apology, or despite this correction, it still stung somewhere?

If yes, know that you are not alone.

People might not always mean everything they say out of anger or any other confusing and heavy emotion they might be carrying, but how you choose to feel in response is your own.

Sending everyone a little extra love today!

Sometimes the hardest part of checking in with someone is coming up with questions. We are all programmed to ask “how are you?” or “how are you feeling?” and although these are perfectly lovely questions – chances are, the responses will be just as generic and automatic. Asking alternative questions can help the person pause and reflect on how they are doing and connect with us in a way that would enhance deeper understanding.

In this post, I want to share with you some reminders that build the foundations of a healthy/thriving relationship dynamic. This applies to all relationship types. It is important that we are aware of our own biases, triggers, and insecurities when we show up in relationships.

Let me preface this by saying, choice is in itself a privilege. I acknowledge that when we are reliant on our families for resources to survive, we might not feel like we have much of a choice.

However, what I'm speaking about is the quality of our relationship with our parents/caregivers. There is often scope for movement and shifts within them that can be catalysed by communication and expression. Choosing the quality of our relationship with them might mean deeply reflecting on our needs and the ways in which they aren't met. It might mean forming boundaries, it might mean not making excuses for abuse and manipulation within oneself. It might also mean nurturing love, acknowledging that they too perhaps did their best but not using that as an excuse to keep the relationship as is.

In India, a lot of weight is placed on our relationship with our parents and we often aren't even 'allowed' to talk about it to others such as our friends. So this becomes deeply internal work. Choosing the kind of relationship you want is an internal process of recognition, unlearning and acceptance.

Sometimes the assumptions we have about relationships can be misleading and lead to unnecessary resentment, guilt, or conflict. Since I have been discussing what a ‘secure’ relationship is in my recent posts, I also want to highlight some things that are completely normal in a healthy relationship.

What are some assumptions you believed about relationships but now recognize they are just myths?
