What is Hemophilia?
Hemophilia is a genetic bleeding disorder in which the blood does not clot properly due to the deficiency of certain clotting factors (usually Factor VIII in Hemophilia A or Factor IX in Hemophilia B). This leads to prolonged bleeding, even from minor injuries, and sometimes internal bleeding in joints and muscles, which can cause long-term damage if not managed in time.
Common Signs & Symptoms:
* Frequent or unexplained bruising
* Prolonged bleeding from cuts or injuries
* Bleeding into joints (causing pain, swelling, stiffness)
* Nosebleeds or bleeding gums
* Excessive bleeding after surgery or dental procedures
Is There a Cure?
Currently, hemophilia has no permanent cure, but it is highly manageable with modern medical care. Treatment mainly involves replacement therapy, where the missing clotting factor is infused into the bloodstream. With proper care, individuals with hemophilia can lead healthy, active lives.
Prevention & Care:
While hemophilia cannot be prevented (as it is inherited), complications can be minimized by:
✔ Early diagnosis and regular monitoring
✔ Prophylactic (preventive) clotting factor therapy
✔ Avoiding high-risk physical activities
✔ Maintaining good dental hygiene to prevent bleeding
✔ Genetic counseling for families with a history of hemophilia
