What are Orthoptic Exercises / Vision Therapy? 👁️

Orthoptic exercises also known as vision therapy are structured, evidence-based rehabilitation programs designed to optimise how the eyes and brain function together.
They are not random eye movements..
They are prescribed after a detailed binocular vision assessment and tailored to the patient’s specific dysfunction.
So what do they improve?
✔ Depth perception — accurate 3D awareness and spatial judgement
✔ Binocularity — stable coordination between both eyes
✔ Convergence & accommodation — essential for reading, studying and prolonged screen use
✔ Digital eye strain — reducing fatigue, headaches and focusing discomfort
✔ Post-squint (strabismus) surgery rehabilitation — strengthening fusion after surgical alignment

After squint surgery, alignment can be corrected anatomically.
But alignment alone does not guarantee functional fusion.
That neurological coordination often needs training.
That is where orthoptics play a crucial role.

Not all glasses prescriptions can be reversed.
If refractive error is determined by axial length or corneal curvature, exercises will not alter anatomy.
