On this auspicious occasion of Devshayani Ashadhi Ekadashi, we pay homage to the divine sleep of Lord Vishnu and the commencement of the sacred period known as Chaturmas. It is believed that Shri Vishnu falls into a deep slumber on this day and awakens after four months in the celestial ocean of Kshirsagar. Due to the presence of Adhik Maas (an extra month in the Hindu calendar), the duration of Chaturmas this year will extend to five months. During this period, which is considered highly significant, certain auspicious activities such as Marriage, Upanayana (sacred thread ceremony), Mundan (tonsure), or Griha Pravesh (housewarming) are traditionally avoided, as it is believed that seeking the blessings of Shri Vishnu may not be possible.
To observe this sacred time, let us come together in devotion and follow the prescribed rituals and practices:
🕉️ Worship Shri Vishnu: Dedicate your prayers and perform a special puja to Lord Vishnu. Seek His divine grace and blessings for a righteous and fulfilling life.
📿 Chant or Listen to Vishnu Sahastranama: Recite or listen to the Vishnu Sahastranama, the thousand names of Lord Vishnu, to invoke His divine presence and attain spiritual enlightenment.
🧘♀️ Engage in Upasana: Utilize the extended period of Chaturmas for deepening your spiritual practices. Engage in meditation, japa (repetition of the divine name), or any other form of spiritual discipline that resonates with you.
🤲 Donate: Embrace the spirit of selfless giving by offering donations to the less fortunate. Extend your support through food, clothing, or any other form of assistance to those in need. Generosity and compassion are integral aspects of this sacred period.
🌱 Observe Fasting: If possible, observe a fast on this day to purify your body and mind. Fasting helps in cultivating self-discipline and focus, allowing you to connect more deeply with the divine.
🚫 Avoid Tamsik Foods: In alignment with the principles of Ayurveda, abstain from consuming non-vegetarian food and tamsik ingredients such as onion and garlic during these five months. Opt for light and sattvic meals that are easier to digest.
❌ Do Not Eat or Donate Rice: As part of the observance, refrain from consuming or donating rice today.
🌿 Tulsi Worship: Tulsi, the holy basil plant, holds great significance in Hinduism. Avoid plucking Tulsi leaves on this day. If you wish to use Tulsi leaves for worship, collect them a day before. Additionally, refrain from watering the Tulsi plant, as it is believed that even Tulsi Mata observes a fast without water today.
