Shri Prakash Abitkar, Hon’ble Minister for Public Health and Family Welfare, Government of Maharashtra, visited the Model Rural Health Research Unit (MRHRU), Vani, District Nashik, on 22 August 2026.

During the visit, the Hon’ble Minister reviewed the ongoing and proposed research activities of MRHRU, Vani, with a special focus on snakebite prevention and control. He acknowledged the collaborative efforts of the State Public Health System, Department of Health Research, and ICMR-NIRWoH, Mumbai, the mentor institute of MRHRU, Vani, in strengthening research capacity and promoting evidence-based public health interventions in the region. The Hon’ble Minister appreciated the efforts of the MRHRU, Vani team and expressed his continued support for advancing research and public health initiatives in the future.

Dr. Sunita Golait, Joint Director (Hospitals), Directorate of Health Services, Government of Maharashtra, and State Nodal Officer for Snakebite Prevention and Control, also visited MRHRU, Vani on 22 August 2026. She congratulated the team for its grassroots-level research and evidence generation in the area of snakebite prevention and control. Dr. Golait expressed her interest in further strengthening collaboration between the State Health System and MRHRU, Vani, for future research and public health programmes.

An interactive and enriching session was conducted at Urban Primary Health Centre (UPHC) Moshi, Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) Pune, with support of the Medical Officer on 20 August 2026. The session focused on understanding the ongoing work of ASHAs and ANMs at the Health and Wellness Centre, along with discussions on their roles and responsibilities, challenges in delivering community-based healthcare services. A refresher training was conducted by Dr Beena Joshi on Comprehensive Primary Health Care (CPHC) services to strengthen knowledge and improve service delivery.
As part of the community awareness initiative, the ASHA Flipbook, prepared for community awareness and orientation, was also provided. The session was attended by 8 ANMs and 45 ASHAs which provided a valuable platform for interaction, learning, and experience sharing.

An adolescent health awareness session was conducted on 20 August 2026 at Madhyamik Vidyalaya, Thergaon Zone, reaching around 50 adolescent girls and boys. The session covered physical, mental and behavioural changes during adolescence, menstruation and menstrual hygiene, anemia prevention and management, healthy nutrition, hand hygiene, HPV vaccination and recommended age criteria, and the importance of Weekly Iron and Folic Acid Supplementation (WIFS). An interactive Q&A session enabled students to clarify their concerns and make informed choices about their health and well-being. Healthy knowledge and habits today empower adolescents to lead healthier lives tomorrow.

On World Mosquito Day, August 20, 2026, the EQUIP-HWC Project team, with support from Health Department officials, conducted community awareness sessions at Yamunanagar OPD Area, Sindhu Nagar, and Mhatre Wasti Urban Primary Health Centres in Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), reaching around 70 community members.
The sessions focused on , and prevention, mosquito breeding control, and the importance of maintaining clean and dry surroundings. Community members were encouraged to eliminate stagnant water, regularly clean and cover water containers, and adopt simple preventive measures to reduce mosquito breeding and protect their families and communities. Snakebite Envenoming Declared a Notifiable Disease in Maharashtra

The Government of Maharashtra has declared snakebite envenoming a notifiable disease, marking an important milestone in strengthening surveillance and public health response to snakebite in the state. This development follows a 12-year trajectory of research, implementation and policy engagement involving ICMR-NIRWoH, Mumbai, MRHRU Vani, and several clinical and research collaborators.

The journey dates back to 2014, when research led by Dr Rahul Gajbhiye and his team in Dahanu, Palghar, documented a case fatality rate of 4.5%. Following capacity building of Medical Officers, including the contribution of Padma Shri Dr Himmatrao Bawaskar, strengthened clinical practices and community interventions, case fatality declined to 0.4% within a year.

The experience contributed to the ICMR National Task Force for Snakebite Research and subsequently to the ICMR National Snakebite Project across Maharashtra and Odisha. Over the years, findings from this work were disseminated through peer-reviewed scientific publications and contributed to advocacy for stronger national and state-level responses to snakebite, including a dedicated programme and systematic notification.

The contribution also extended to knowledge translation. Educational materials on snakebite for healthcare workers and communities were copyright registered in 2023 to Dr Rahul Gajbhiye, Dr Hrishikesh Munshi and Dr Himmatrao Bawaskar.
The accumulated evidence and policy engagement contributed to national discussions leading to the National Action Plan for Snakebite Envenoming (NAPSE). At the state level, MRHRU Vani facilitated training of more than 450 Medical Officers in 2025 and supported stakeholder deliberations for the State Action Plan for Snakebite Envenoming (SAPSE) in January 2026.

On 1 July 2026, Dr Rahul Gajbhiye engaged with Shri Prakashrao Abitkar, Minister for Public Health and Family Welfare, Government of Maharashtra, regarding strengthening snakebite control and the importance of notification.

The notification announced by the Government of Maharashtra is an important step towards systematic surveillance, improved understanding of disease burden, identification of hotspots, better resource planning and monitoring of anti-snake venom availability and utilisation.

We acknowledge the contributions of our scientists Dr Rahul Gajbhiye, Dr Hrishikesh Munshi and the many researchers, clinicians, health workers, administrators, policymakers and communities who have contributed to strengthening the snakebite research and clinical ecosystem.
