Redirection is not always the solution. Understanding the reason behind the behavior is.
When ge***al self-stimulation becomes frequent or difficult to redirect in children with ASD/ADHD, simply saying “stop” or offering a replacement may not be enough.
The more helpful question is: What need is this behavior meeting?
A meaningful support plan looks beyond the behavior itself:
✨ Identify the trigger and function
✨ Teach an appropriate alternative
✨ Reinforce the alternative consistently
✨ Create a predictable, sensory-supportive environment
✨ Monitor and adjust the plan over time
And remember—your child is not doing this to upset you. They may be communicating or regulating a need in the only way they currently know.
At Manomay, we support families with assessment, behavior intervention, parent guidance, and ongoing support.
