28th May is celebrated globally as World Menstrual Hygiene Day .

In a novel attempt to create awareness and spread accurate scientific knowledge , various mediums are used by the highly motivated medical community in our country .

One such attempt by Dr Ashwini Nabar , practicing Obstetrician and Gynecologist has rightfully earned a first prize in a competition highlighting ‘ Menstruation is normal ‘ in any art form .

It’s a matter concerning all our daughters and mothers and so am sharing here with her permission .

ITS NORMAL

A sweet young girl, all of twelve
Was playing joyfully with her friends
Running along the river
Along turns and bends

Suddenly she felt
Some weird cramping and pain
A trickle from down below
Left on her skirt a stain.

Frightened and scared, she ran home
Through the village lane
She just wanted to hug her mom tight
And to feel okay again.

She didn't know much about periods
Just that women were treated differently those days
Her grandmother had strict rules
And her set old- fashioned ways.

But unfortunately, that's who she bumped into
Who noticed and didn't need to ask more
"Stay out , you're impure ! ,"She yelled
"Don't you dare enter the door!"

"Your meals will be sent outside
You will have a separate plate
Don't touch anything
Don't step out of the gate "

"Periods are sinful"
The old woman rambled on and on
"Don't show me your face
Until they're done and gone!"

The little girl trembled and stood still
Tears rolling down her face
But her mother, who had heard everything rushed to her,
Held her in a warm embrace

The old grandmom was furious
But saw the steely resolve in the mother's eyes
"Pls don't talk further", she said
"Don't feed my darling daughter these lies!"

"These superstitions and myths
Have dictated our lives too many years
It's high time we see logic and sense
And shake off these irrational fears "

"You're healthy and normal, she told the little girl
The period is a sign
That you're growing up now
And are absolutely fine!"

"So come into the house
And wipe away your tear
MENSTRUATION IS NORMAL
It's all ok, my dear!"

Recently came across an article related to a session Titled ‘State of Mind: How to make studies stress free’.
The discussion opened with a candid conversation with a teenage studying in Mumbai . After hearing her worries and lack of confidence in herself , it becomes imperative to equip ourselves with some tips and better understanding to empower kids to cope with stress.

The teenager didn’t wish for her parents or teachers to help her because they tended to do so from their perspective. What she wanted was support from them, while keeping her priorities at the centre of the solution.
She notes that what remained fundamental for mental health intervention for children and teens was trust. They shouldn’t be afraid of opening up and what determined this was the first reaction they received from adults when they did that.

Here’s what parents need to know about managing the mental health of their children:

1. NEED FOR HEALTHY COMMUNICATION
Youngsters often complain about the disconnect they feel with their parents because of which they don’t like to communicate. They feel most conversations are placed around their studies, exams and career plans.
Tip for parent -
Spend time with children being non judgemental .
This involves having a conversation without devices and one that doesn’t involve studies or careers.

2. BUILDING EMPATHY AND TRUST
Observation-
We come across teenagers often suffering from a lack of self-esteem.
1. There’s a constant sense of ‘I am not measuring up,”
2. There is a sense of a loss of agency since they are constantly being told what to do.
3. They are very disconnected from themselves despite being connected through gadgets.
Tip for parent -
Parents need to come from a place of compassionate curiosity to really get to know their child.
Parents can ‘ask’ and not ‘tell’ their children to do things.
Give them choices and agency.

Use the You-Me-We’ strategy when communicating: “I listen to you even though I may not agree; I explain my point of view; and we find out how we can manage this together,”

Teenagers are not used to listening to good things about themselves. So, parents can acknowledge the efforts they are making instead of the result.

3. NEED TO INCULCATE THE RIGHT VALUES

Parents should not to be guilt-ridden all the time as we are all living in challenging times.
Tip :
Parents should form a bond with their children from Day 1 and truly understand their capacities, skills and interests before suggesting anything.

There is a heightened expression of emotion these days. The ability to tolerate stress has gone done. So, their reactions are much more severe
There is a lack of purpose and there’s an existential crisis wherein no matter how much is being done, there is a lack of gratitude.

Tip :
children need to be inculcated with a sense of moral ethics and gratitude – a value system wherein the ‘me’ is not just restricted to an immediate gratification but also includes a sense of purpose to one’s family and society at large.

4. IMPORTANCE OF THERAPY
Therapy or counselling must be sought to better the mental health of children when needed.

Tip : Raining awareness in parents that’s not every assessment would lead to medications and there are guidelines available as well.
Also, anti-depressants are not steroids and won’t make you dependent.

5. SELF-CARE FOR CAREGIVERS- Managing children’s mental health would become a lot easier if the caregivers take care of themselves through daily self-care practice. Parents often have a lot on their minds and if they don’t unburden themselves, they simply won’t have the energy to interact with teenagers with all their sense active.

As parents of babies and toddlers we always come across multiple queries during their dynamic and fast evolving development , both physically and mentally .
When our child first starts to pick objects , uses their hands to feed themselves and to write , the question often arises whether we should be deliberately guiding them to use the right hand .
Dr Nirja Trivedi , a practicing Pediatric Physiotherapist addresses this and many other such issues in her Thursdayshort videos . I find them very informative , succinct but scientific and is like a quick byte of knowledge delivered just right .
I have her permission to share this video here . You can follow her if you would like to see more videos.

It’s World Obesity Day today , 4 th March and it couldn’t have been more relevant now .
Post COVID we have seen the numbers of obese , overweight and borderline overweight go up multiple times across all age groups in Pediatric and adolescents too .
No wonder then that the theme this year is ‘ Everyone needs to act ‘ .

The threat of this obesity pandemic causing long term health outcomes causing early cardiovascular disorders , insulin resistance , dyslipidemia , menstrual disorders , orthopaedic problems and psychosocial issues , is very real and we need to tackle it head on with aggressive monitoring and prompt and age appropriate remedial measures which would include dietary modifications for healthier options , increasing and encouraging physical activities ( at least 45 mins every day ) , enabling reduced screen time ( less than 2 hrs per day) and regular monitoring by medical personnel .

It’s a village that needs to help curb this monster - it starts from parents , family , extended family , freinds , pediatrician , schools and communities .

Let’s pledge that ‘ each of us will act ‘ to empower our children lead healthy lives .

Ganpati Bappa Morya .

The festive time of Lord Ganesha is all about welcoming the most beloved God with a lot of zeal and fervor.
There are so many legends and stories that children need to know about Lord Ganapati, the God of wisdom. It’snot just about celebrating the love and devotion towards the God but children can learn a lot many life lessons and values from Lord Ganesha.

1. Being Resourceful and Innovative:

When Lord Shiva asked Ganesha and his brother to circle the world thrice to get the Fruit, Ganesha was aware of his limitations in traveling the world on his tiny mouse, and took adifferent approach to tackle the situation. He circled his parents, mentioning they were his ultimate ‘world’, and subsequently got the fruit ahead of his brother. His way of handling the situation shows how resourceful Lord Ganesha was. When he faced a crisis, how he acted quick enough to come up with a plausible solution with his presence of mind.

2. Being a Good Listener:

Lord Ganesha is a seeker of knowledge and wisdom. And that is why he is found to have large ears. This symbolizes that one should listen attentively to become knowledgeable and to communicate effectively. Being a good listener is a great virtue that helps oneself analyze situations and gain information more efficiently to make better decisions in life. When children are able to listen attentively, they would grow up wiser and smarter.

3. Respecting Parents:

Lord Ganesha is the epitome of devotion and respect towards parents. The act of circling his parents as a mark of them being his world shows his love and respect for his parents. This story can help children learn about his love and concerns for his parents and how to love and respect them.

4. Being Dutiful

The tale of him fulfilling his mother’s order and facing the repercussions of his father, Lord Shiva, is a well-known example of being dutiful, despite all the adverse consequences. This very story is a life lesson for children to understand being dutiful and fulfill their responsibilities.

5. Being Humble and Respectful:

Though Lord Ganesha has a huge physique, he is more humble than any other deities. He rides a puny mouse that symbolizes the fact that he is humble and reverent even towards a tiny creature. Being humble and being respectful to those smaller than us is a quality that needs to be learned from Lord Ganesha. One should be aware of their own strengths and weaknesses and must learn humility and politeness.

A common predicament in the cities especially during monsoons , is about ensuring clean and hygienic drinking water for our children and families .

Amongst the many methods of filtration , disinfection and boiling , I find boiling simple, effective way to eliminate almost all infection causing viruses , bacteria and protozoas/ parasites .

Bring the clear water to a rolling boil for 1 minute (at elevations above 6,500 feet, boil for three minutes). Let the boiled water cool. Store the boiled water in clean sanitized containers with tight covers.

A lot of homes now have Reverse osmosis water purifiers . The quality and maintenance of these are very important . If in doubt , please boil the drinking water .

QUOTIENTS THAT COUNT

Let’s talk today about the various quotients of intelligence that we refer to while describing and evaluating the various aspects that make our personality and determine our abilities and or disabilities .

According to psychologists, there are four types of intelligence:

1) Intelligence Quotient (IQ)

2) Emotional Quotient (EQ)

3) Social Quotient (SQ)

4) Adversity Quotient (AQ)

*1. Intelligence Quotient (IQ):* this is the measure of your comprehension ability- to solve maths; memorize things and recall subject matters.

*2. Emotional Quotient (EQ)*: this is the measure of your ability to maintain peace with others; keep to time; be responsible; be honest; respect boundaries; be humble, genuine and considerate.

*3. Social Quotient (SQ)*:
This is the measure of your ability to build a network of friends and maintain it over a long period of time.

People that have higher EQ and SQ tend to go farther in life than those with high IQ but low EQ and SQ. Most schools capitalize in improving IQ level while EQ and SQ are played down.

A man of high IQ can end up being employed by a man of high EQ and SQ even though he has an average IQ.

Your EQ represents your character; your SQ represents your charisma. Give in to habits that will improve these three Qs but more especially your EQ and SQ.

EQ and SQ make one manage better than the other.

Pls don't teach children only to have higher IQ , but also to have higher EQ and SQ.

Now there is a 4th one :
A new paradigm

*4. The Adversity Quotient (AQ):* The measure of your ability to go through a rough patch in life and come out without losing your mind.

AQ determines who will give up in face of troubles and may abandon their families.
In the current context of Corona, many professionally successful people are going thru bouts of Depression. Because they haven't seen and thus are unprepared for Adversity.

AS PARENTS :

1. Expose children to other areas of life than academic. They should adore manual work, sport and art .

2. Develop their EQ, SQ and AQ. They should become multifaceted human beings able to do things independently of the parents.

Finally, do not prepare the road for the children. Prepare the children for the road.
