Your thyroid needs fuel.
Most people are aware that thyroid produces hormones that regulate metabolism, energy, body temperature, and overall vitality. But here is something many people don’t know:
Your thyroid mainly releases T4, which is an inactive thyroid hormone. For your cells to actually use it, your body needs to convert T4 into the active hormone T3.
A significant portion of this conversion takes place in the liver, and this process depends on several factors, including good nutrition, healthy liver function, adequate calories, and sufficient carbohydrate availability.
When people follow very low-carbohydrate diets or stay in a prolonged calorie deficit, the body may adapt by producing less active T3 while increasing reverse T3 (rT3)—an inactive form that helps conserve energy. This is one reason some people experience fatigue, feeling cold, sluggish metabolism, or difficulty maintaining energy during restrictive dieting.
This doesn’t mean everyone needs a high-carb diet. It does mean that completely eliminating carbohydrates isn’t the right choice for everyone, especially if you’re experiencing symptoms of low energy or have thyroid concerns.
Instead of fearing carbohydrates, choose quality carbohydrate sources such as: Sweet potatoes, rice, low sugar fruits, oats or legumes
✨ A healthy thyroid needs adequate calories, protein, carbohydrates, key nutrients (like selenium, zinc, and iron), healthy liver function, quality sleep, and effective stress management.
