Occupational therapy isn’t just about exercises. It’s about turning play into purposeful learning that helps children gain confidence in daily life. 💪

Here are 3 simple OT activities that strengthen the skills needed for everyday tasks:

🥄 Self-feeding with playdough – Improves hand strength, grasp, and spoon control.

🫙 Opening containers with theraputty – Builds finger strength and the twisting motions needed to open lunch boxes, bottles, and snack containers.

🧺 Pulling wipes one at a time – Encourages bilateral coordination, hand control, and precision.

Small activities today can lead to big wins in independence tomorrow. ❤️

✨ Save this reel to try these at home, and share it with a parent looking for engaging summer activities!

Heavy work isn’t about lifting heavy weights—it’s about giving the muscles and joints the kind of input the brain needs to feel calm, organised, and ready to learn. 💙

Activities like pushing, pulling, carrying, climbing, crawling, or rolling provide deep pressure (proprioceptive input) that can help children improve focus, body awareness, emotional regulation, and coordination.

Wondering if your child could benefit from heavy work activities? Our therapists can guide you with the right activities based on your child’s unique sensory needs.

✨ Save this reel for later and share it with another parent who might find it helpful.

The book your child asks you to read for the 37th time? Read it again. 📕

It may feel repetitive to you, but to your child, every re-read is strengthening important developmental skills.

During shared reading, children aren’t simply listening to words. They’re building vocabulary, strengthening memory, practising attention, learning to understand emotions, improving sequencing skills and developing the executive functioning abilities they’ll rely on every day.

From an Occupational Therapy perspective, story time becomes much more than literacy. It’s an opportunity to support communication, emotional regulation, social participation and cognitive development—all through a simple, enjoyable routine.

The best part? You don’t need expensive toys or structured activities.

Just 10–15 minutes of present, interactive reading each day can make a meaningful difference.

So tonight, slow down, ask a few questions, let your child interrupt with theirs, and don’t worry if it’s the same book again.

Their brain is learning more than you realise.

A strong core is the foundation for so many everyday skills. 🎯

When a child’s core muscles are weak, they may struggle with sitting upright, maintaining balance, coordinating movements, and participating confidently in play.

This bridge exercise with a block provides tactile feedback, helping children activate the right muscles while making the movement more effective.

Think your child may have weak core strength? An occupational therapy assessment can help identify the root cause and create a plan that supports their development. 🫶🏼

One activity. So many developmental benefits. 💙

What looks like a fun game is actually helping children build essential skills they use every single day.

Balancing on one leg while picking up and placing objects helps improve:
✨ Single-leg balance
✨ Core strength
✨ Motor planning
✨ Foot coordination
✨ Postural control
✨ Lower body strength

These skills support everything from walking, running and climbing to dressing, playing and participating confidently in everyday activities.

At Stepping Stones, we use play with purpose—because children learn best when they’re having fun. 🌈

Every small step matters, and with the right guidance, those steps lead to greater independence and a better quality of life.

If you or your child could benefit from personalised Occupational Therapy support, we’re here to help.

Did you know your child’s pencil grip is expected to change as they grow? ✏️

A mature pencil grasp doesn’t happen overnight—it’s a developmental journey that evolves through different stages as hand muscles, coordination, and fine motor skills develop.

From the palmar supinate grasp in infancy to the dynamic tripod grasp by 6–7 years, every stage has a purpose. Skipping or struggling with these milestones may make writing, colouring, and other classroom tasks more challenging.

If your child is still using an immature grasp beyond the expected age, early intervention can make a big difference.

At Stepping Stones, our Occupational Therapists assess the why behind your child’s pencil grip and help build the strength, coordination, and motor control needed for confident handwriting.

Remember: Every child develops at their own pace, but knowing what’s age-appropriate helps you support them better. 💙
