Here is the definitive breakdown of when to seek professional treatment and when to manage an issue at home:
1. Milia (Tiny White Bumps)
Verdict: FIX IT
Why & How: Milia are essentially keratin trapped under the skin and will not resolve by themselves. The safest and most effective solution is in-clinic extraction performed by a professional.
2. Isolated
Verdict: LEAVE IT
Why & How: DO NOT POP IT! Popping an isolated pimple dramatically increases the risk of inflammation, scarring, and post-inflammatory (dark spots). Use a pimple patch to protect it and let it heal naturally.
3. Active (Multiple Bumps)
Verdict: FIX IT
Why & How: Active, persistent acne is a medical condition requiring intervention. It needs a multi-faceted approach involving prescription medications (topical or oral) and in-clinic treatments such as Chemical Peels, Carbon Peels, and various Laser therapies.
4. /Fine Lines
Verdict: FIX IT
Why & How: While prevention is paramount (wear SPF daily!), established lines can be effectively treated. Professional options include injectables like and Dermal Fillers.
5. Dark Spots/
Verdict: FIX IT
Why & How: Pigmentary issues require a tailored and often long-term management plan. Treatment options include Medications, specially formulated Chemical Peels, and Pigment-targeting Lasers.
6. Open
Verdict: LEAVE IT
Why & How: Pores are a natural and necessary part of your skin. You cannot permanently eliminate them. However, you can significantly shrink their appearance and keep them clean with treatments like deep-cleansing facials and light resurfacing procedures.

Kerala is witnessing a mumps outbreak having reported 190 cases in a single day on March 10 2024 (Sunday).
There have been 2,505 cases of the viral infection this month, and 11,467 cases in the little over two months this year

Which gets us thinking :
What is Mumps?
How to prevent it?

Mumps is a contagious viral infection, caused by paramyxovirus, that primarily affects the salivary glands, causing swelling and pain in the cheeks and jaw

Age:
Most common in children aged 5 to 15 years old who have not been vaccinated.
However, unvaccinated adults can also contract the virus.

Symptoms:
•Fever
•Swollen and painful cheeks and jaw
• Headache
• Bodyache and weakness
• Loss of appetite

*Consult your paediatrician for treatment

How does it spread
(Cause):
‐ Mumps is highly contagious, primarily spread through respiratory droplets from coughing, sneezing, or talking of an infected person
-It can also spread through close contact with infected saliva, such as sharing utensils or drinks

Prevention:
It's crucial to practice good hygiene and avoid close contact with infected individuals to prevent the spread of the virus.

MMR vaccine is highly effective, with two doses providing long-lasting immunity in most individuals. It's essential to stay up-to-date on vaccinations to help prevent outbreaks and protect ourselves and others.

In most cases, mumps is a self-limiting disease, but in rare cases it can lead to complications such as swelling of the brain(aseptic meningitis & encephalitis), pancreatitis, SN hearing loss and painful inflammation of the te**is (orchitis) in adult males.
