Syphilis is a s*xually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum. It progresses through distinct stages if left untreated, each with different symptoms:
1. Primary stage: A painless sore or ulcer, called a chancre, appears at the site of infection (often ge***al, a**l, or oral) about 3 weeks after exposure. The chancre heals on its own within 3-6 weeks, even without treatment.
2. Secondary stage: A few weeks to months later, if the infection is not treated, the bacteria spread throughout the body. This stage is marked by skin rashes (often on the palms of the hands or soles of the feet), mucous membrane lesions, fever, swollen lymph nodes, and other flu-like symptoms.
3. Latent stage: If untreated, syphilis can enter a latent (dormant) phase where no symptoms are present. This can last for years, though the infection is still in the body and can be transmitted.
4. Tertiary stage: About 15-30% of people who do not receive treatment for syphilis may develop tertiary syphilis, which can occur years or even decades after initial infection. It can cause serious damage to organs such as the heart, brain, liver, and nerves, leading to conditions like cardiovascular syphilis, neurosyphilis, or even death.
Transmission: Syphilis is primarily transmitted through direct contact with syphilitic sores during vaginal, a**l, or oral s*x. It can also be passed from mother to child during pregnancy, leading to conge***al syphilis.
Diagnosis: Syphilis is diagnosed through blood tests or by examining samples from sores during the primary or secondary stages.
Treatment: Syphilis is treatable with antibiotics, typically penicillin. Early-stage syphilis can be cured with a single dose, while more advanced stages may require longer courses of treatment.
Prevention: The best prevention methods include consistent use of condoms during s*x, regular STI testing, and s*xual communication about STI status.
If left untreated, syphilis can cause severe complications and can be fatal in its tertiary stage. Therefore, early detection and treatment are crucial for a full recovery.
