Antara Iyar remembers a time when low energy had made her withdraw from many parts of everyday life.

After bariatric surgery and her recovery, being able to feel energetic again and regain her confidence and self-esteem has meant a great deal to her. She now feels more capable of doing the things that had once become difficult and describes having her energy and vitality back as one of the most meaningful changes in her life.

Her experience reflects how improvements in health can gradually influence everyday independence, confidence, and the way a person engages with life.

We are grateful to Antara for trusting Dr. Ramen Goel and his team with her care and for sharing her experience with others who may be going through similar struggles.

For Mrs Ramanathan, one of the most meaningful parts of her transformation has been seeing possibilities return to her life.

Plans that once felt difficult to imagine now feel within reach. There is more spontaneity in her weekends, more freedom in where she can go, and a growing list of places she wants to experience. Each new place she visits feels like another little box checked off a list she had been carrying for years.

And perhaps that is what makes her story so personal: she is not just making plans for the future anymore. She is getting to live them.

Share Mrs Ramanathan’s story with someone who may see a little bit of their own journey in hers.

Nearly 1 in 3 Indian women are now living with overweight or obesity.

NFHS-6 data show that 30.7% of women aged 15–49 in India are overweight or obese, up from 24% in NFHS-5.

This rising burden matters because obesity can affect metabolic health and is associated with conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and other chronic health concerns. For women in their reproductive years, recognizing these risks early becomes especially important.

Greater awareness, timely assessment, and access to appropriate care can help women take a more informed approach to their health.

Read more about why rising obesity among Indian women is highlighting the need for greater attention to preconception health.

Today, Mrs. Kavita speaks about how different life feels. She has more energy, feels more active, and is able to enjoy her days with a sense of ease that she had been missing.

The change has also been felt at home. She feels happier, more energetic, and more present with her family. Even the little things in everyday life feel different now.

For her, perhaps the most meaningful part of this journey is simply being able to live her life fully, with good health and without the constant dependence on medicines.

For Mrs. Kavita, managing her health had become a constant part of everyday life.

Despite being on multiple medicines, her Blood Sugar remained very high, along with Hypertension and Thyroid issues. The constant tiredness also began affecting how she went about her day and managed her work.

As a Corporate Trainer, her work depended on her being present, energetic and able to engage with people. Over time, keeping up with all of this became increasingly difficult.

Her story is about what happened when managing these health concerns became more than just a daily struggle, and she decided to look at a different approach.

Four years after bariatric surgery, Mrs. Tilottama Koli looks back and sees how much has changed.

Nearly 50 kg lighter, she has found a new ease in her everyday life. Things that had once become difficult are now part of her life again - going out, being active, travelling, and enjoying experiences she had missed for years.

For her, one of the most special moments was being able to visit Ekveera Devi in a way she had not been able to for many years.

Her story is a reminder that when weight has been affecting your everyday life, the change you hope for may be about much more than losing kilos. It can be about getting back the freedom to move, explore, and enjoy life.

This is what her journey looks like, four years after taking that step.

10 years of evidence can add an important perspective to how we think about obesity treatment.

A recent study published in JAMA Network Open looked at the long-term cost-effectiveness of metabolic and bariatric surgery for adolescents with severe obesity. The analysis found that both sleeve gastrectomy and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass were cost-effective compared with no surgery over a 10-year period.

For a chronic disease such as obesity, looking beyond the immediate results matters. Longer-term research helps us understand the value of treatment over time and contributes to more informed conversations around care.
