Married for 15 years. If I could talk to my younger self, I’d say this:
1. Don’t solve her feelings. Understand them.
Sometimes “You don’t spend time with me” really means, “I don’t feel important anymore.”
2. Silence isn’t always peace.
When your partner stops complaining, sometimes they’ve stopped expecting to be heard.
3. Don’t let your parents become the third person in your marriage.
Respect your family, but protect the emotional space of the family you’re building.
4. Don’t become roommates after becoming parents.
Your children need your attention. Your marriage needs some too.
5. Never punish vulnerability.
If honesty always leads to anger or defensiveness, your partner will eventually stop being honest.
6. Stop keeping score.
Marriage isn’t “I did more.” It’s “How do we make this work together?”
And after 15 years, here’s what I understand:
You don’t stay married by loving the same person for 15 years.
You stay married by learning to love the person they’ve become. ❤️
