Spoke Rheumatology and Recurrent Pregnancy Loss - ways to improve outcomes for our patients

It was wonderful listening to other speakers from various specialities - all addressing ways to improve pregnancy outcomes for RPL cy

It is always a pleasure to meet my students - who are doing so well in their careers. Dr. Tanvi Shah is a bright, young Obstetrician and Gynaecologist in Mumbai.

It is unfortunate to see so many people who could have gotten better and lead a healthier life, but suffer due to various factors like lack of awareness about scientifically proven treatments, and in general a poor support system.

Most people with, say a cardiac disease, would diligently follow their Cardiologist’s recommendations and stay on the right course. In fact their friends and relatives would encourage them to do so.

Similarly, wouldn’t it be great if people suffering from Rheumatism and Autoimmune diseases get the same kind support from their loved ones and from the society!

I leaves me wondering, what can be done to help?

SARD-ILD National Symposium, Mumbai

Systemic Autoimmune Rheumatic Diseases (SARD) related Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD), also known as Connective Tissue Disease associated ILD (CTD-ILD) is one of the leading cause of ILD in India.

Management is challenging and also rapidly evolving due to advances in availability of newer antibody testing panels and newer tailored treatment options.

Best results can be obtained by:
1. Multi-Disciplinary Discussion (MDD) among Pulmonologist, Rheumatologist, Radiologist and the Patient / Family
2. Strict and prolonged monitoring for evolution/ change in disease
3. Appropriate immunomodulators, anti-fibrotics, rehab and vaccinations.
4. Long term commitment to treatments.

Every patient is different; and treating team must optimise care of a given person. It takes time - and sustained efforts. But it absolutely worth it.

Today, I was speaking on 2 panels on RA-ILD and myositis-ILD from the Rheumatologist perspective.

It was great to be among learned colleagues and also my teachers from across the country.

For anyone suffering from ILD - take care, and ensure to see both the specialist (Pulmonologist & Rheumatologist).

Don’t stop Medicines - Listen to this!

Many patients do not get optimal results because of early discontinuation of medications. This is often in those patients who were in fact responding well to medicines. And quite often it is due to fear of side effects.

Best strategy is to discuss clearly with your Rheumatologist and follow the plan to taper meds based on your body’s response.

Morning Stiffness lasting for more than 30min can be a symptom of inflammatory arthritis like Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) or Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS).

Do not ignore such early symptoms - consult with a Rheumatologist.
