Notice the physical association patterns that you are using in the situation and change them.
For example- Change how you are breathing, standing, sitting, moving etc.
The change in physical association will help you be more aware and take you towards a more calm state of mind from where you can think rationally and problem solve rather than be bogged down by the situation.

Notice the build up
Start to become more aware of when stress/over whelm starts to build. When you catch it early, it is easier to change. Notice the language and physical patterns within yourself.
Notice how you feel physically and the language you use whenever you are feeling a negative emotion. Next time you see them coming up, consciously try to change it to something positive.

Remove antagonism towards emotions
Many people get antagonistic towards emotions they do not want. Instead just accept that it is there and by accepting it you can change it.

- Use the third person
Use your name instead of saying " I am".
This allows you to dissociate from the emotion, separate yourself from it so that it doesn't feel that bad.

Try this the next time you feel very over whelmed by a situation or person and see the difference.
