If your knee has been bothering you, you’ve probably noticed that not all knee pain feels the same. The exact spot, the type of discomfort, and when it shows up can give important clues about what’s going on. Here are some of the most common patterns we see:
1. Ligament-related pain (instability injuries)
Sudden, sharp pain with swelling and a feeling that the knee may “give way.” Often linked to ACL or MCL injuries from sports, twisting movements, or abrupt stops.
2. Meniscal pain (cartilage injury)
A deep ache within the joint, sometimes with locking or catching during bending. Commonly occurs after twisting or squatting movements.
3. Anterior knee pain (patellofemoral pain)
Discomfort around or behind the kneecap. Typically worsens with stairs, prolonged sitting, or repeated squats.
4. Tendon-related pain (overuse injuries)
Pain just below or above the kneecap. Seen in patellar or quadriceps tendinitis, often due to running, jumping, or training overload.
5. Inner knee pain
Tenderness along the inside of the knee. May be related to MCL strain or pes anserine bursitis.
6. Outer knee pain
Pain along the outside of the knee, common in runners.
Frequently associated with iliotibial band irritation.
7. Posterior knee pain
Tightness or swelling behind the knee. Sometimes linked to a Baker’s cyst.
8. Arthritis-related pain
Gradual stiffness and aching, often worse in the morning or cold weather. Common causes include osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
At Physio Mee, we don’t treat “knee pain” as one generic issue. We identify the source, address contributing factors, and design a focused rehabilitation plan to restore strength, stability, and confident movement.
