“I just stopped my birth control... when will my fertility come back?”
And I completely understand why women ask.
As an OB-GYN, here are a few things I want women to know:
💊🩹Pill, Patch & Ring: These methods temporarily suppress ovulation. Once you stop them, the hormones leave your body quickly, and most women begin ovulating again within weeks, although it can take a few months for cycles to fully regulate.
✨Hormonal IUD: This works mainly inside the uterus by thickening cervical mucus and thinning the uterine lining.
Many women continue to ovulate while using it, so fertility can return immediately after removal.
🩺Copper IUD: This contains no hormones. It works by creating an environment that’s toxic to s***m, preventing fertilization. Once it’s removed, that effect disappears immediately.
💪Implant: The implant continuously releases a progestin that suppresses ovulation. After removal, hormone levels drop quickly, and fertility usually returns within weeks.
💉Depo Shot: This is the one exception. Because the medication remains in your body for months, it can continue delaying ovulation even after your last injection. Fertility may take 9-18 months to return.
✅One more thing: Birth control does not cause infertility.
🗓️When to call your OB-GYN: If you haven’t resumed your period within 3 months after stopping the pill, patch, ring, IUD, or implant, schedule an evaluation. If you stopped the Depo shot, a delayed return of your period can be completely normal.
📌Important point:
Return of fertility does not always mean pregnancy happens immediately.
