Bombay is currently in the middle of a heat wave and while everyone is focusing on fluids through the day it may be SO tempting to drink glasses of fruit juice instead of eating a whole fruit!

But be wary of how much juice you drink - it’s too much sugar, in liquid form, all at once. Even though it is fruit sugar and natural, it’s still sugar

Especially if you have PCOS or are Pregnant or have any other condition in which you need to manage your blood sugar levels, fruit juice can backfire on you

So LIMIT your fruit juice to no more than 150-200ml per day, and ideally have it after an exercise session when your body is in a state where it needs sugar and can instantly use the sugar from the fruit juice

Happy Women’s day! Taking today to share why I feel so passionately about women’s health by sharing my own PCOS story with you

I got diagnosed with PCOS somewhere in 2010-2011 just before I went to Boston - it showed up as irregular periods

Moving on to 2014, probably the worst year of my life (health wise). With absent periods, weight gain, severe mood changes, I was at the peak of my PCOS and it felt uncomfortable enough that I decided to take my doctor’s advice about food and exercise seriously

While medication gave me the kickstart to correct my menstrual cycle, I haven’t needed it again since 2015

Through a combination of regular physical activity, stress management and dietary changes, I’ve been able to completely manage my PCOS and it’s been a super rewarding journey!

6 years later, I still do a little dance every time I get my period - like a celebration of what the body is capable of doing on its own if you just help it a little

If you have PCOS too, know that it can absolutely be managed by making some basic changes to your lifestyle

And you don’t even have to give up your favorite foods to achieve this!

Reach out to me if you’ve been struggling to manage your health and weight with PCOS and we can put a plan in place to figure it out ✨

Weight loss does not mean Better Health

Conditions like PCOS, Diabetes, Heart Disease etc can improve even without any weight loss

Behaviors like eating fruits and veggies, whole grain, lean protein etc improve health outcomes irrespective of weight loss

And yea sometimes you do lose weight - but this weight loss is a side effect of adopting these changes

And do remember when people say “lose weight” they almost always mean “lose fat”

And fat loss very often shows itself in inch loss with no/not a lot of change in the weighing scale

So weight loss doesn’t mean health. Remember, you can be sick and lose weight too

DM me if you are looking to manage your Diabetes and PCOS without focusing on losing weight - I promise it can be done!

Save and Share!

This super basic nutrient, which all of us seem to be deficient in these days, can go a long way towards helping your PCOS!

✨It regulates insulin: this helps manage weight, and helps manage excess male hormones

✨May help regularize periods: by regulating male hormones, insulin indirectly balances the females hormones that allow you to ovulate and have a period

Your vitamin D levels can easily be detected by a blood test! Aim for a value greater than 30 ng/mL

Who else can relate? 😆

Rajma is one of my favorite foods but while my gut bugs have a mega party (they feast on the fiber in beans to produce gas), my tummy feels bloated and not-so-great. 😣

BUT, all the best things in life are worth fighting for and after much practice I have learnt to restrict the portion I eat at one time. This doesn’t overload my gut so less/no bloating and distress.

Also, I eat another smaller portion as a snack in the evening again and this way my brain feels rewarded that it got to eat Rajma twice! Win-win.😁.
✔️Proper portioning allows me to enjoy my favorite foods without affecting my health
✔️I don’t have to think of what to eat for a snack (BIG WIN)
✔️Introducing small portions of beans develops and trains my gut bacteria to digest these easily so maybe some day I’ll be able to tolerate larger portions!

You can use this split concept for absolutely anything by the way - your favorite desert, pizza and even rice! (A lot of my clients get stressed at the thought of having to eat only small portions of rice.)

Did you know you only need ANY 2 of these 3 criteria to be diagnosed as having PCOS?

If you ONLY have polycystic ovaries on an ultrasound and none of these other conditions, YOU DONT HAVE PCOS

Furthermore, there can be many reasons you have PCOS and figuring what is causing YOURS will help decide what kind of lifestyle modification will best help you!

Some signs to watch out for:
✨Irregular periods
✨Unexplained weight gain
✨Hairloss (more than usual)
✨Acne on face, chest, back, neck
✨Hair growth on face, chest, back, neck

These are some signs that there may be some hormonal imbalance at play and changes in food can help with this!

Reach out to me if you know or suspect you have PCOS to figure what strategy will work best for YOU to help manage it ✔️

(Maybe I need to dress this way for the message to be more effective?🙇🏻‍♀️)

Focus on behaviors you CAN change, not on a number you have no real control over!

Have you ever heard “reduce your cholesterol by 50 points!”? No. You’ll always instead be told to make food and exercise modifications that lead to this goal.

Same with weight! It doesn’t matter what you weigh if you are doing your bit to eat nutritious food and are physically active.

You also don’t need to lose weight to improve health - PCOS, Diabetes, High cholesterol etc all benefit from changes in food and physical activity irrespective of whether or not you lose weight!

If you have a headache being caused by a brain tumor will you focus on the headache or on fixing the tumor?
Similarly, if you are gaining weight due to changes in your lifestyle, will you focus on the weight or on fixing the lifestyle?

Chances are when you fix the tumor, your headache will resolve itself; when you fix your lifestyle, your weight will fix itself.

Reach out to me if you would like to learn how you can incorporate all your favorite foods into a lifestyle that will help you fix your health✨
