High Blood Sugar Emergency: DKA Explained | Dr Namrata Agrawal
High blood sugar is not always harmless — it can turn into a life-threatening condition called Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA).
In this video, ICU specialist Dr. Namrata Agrawal explains what DKA is, why it happens, and how it affects the body. When there is not enough insulin, the body starts breaking down fat, producing acids called ketones that can disturb the body’s balance. Warning signs include excessive thirst, frequent urination, vomiting, abdominal pain, deep and rapid breathing, fruity-smelling breath, confusion, and extreme weakness.
DKA can progress quickly and may require ICU care with insulin infusion, IV fluids, and close monitoring. Recognizing symptoms early and seeking timely medical care can prevent serious complications and save lives.
