"Your breath can turn down your pain—if you use it right.”
When you’re in pain, your breathing usually becomes fast, shallow, and tense. This keeps your body in a stress mode, which actually makes pain feel stronger.
Deep breathing helps reverse this by activating your body’s natural relaxation system, which calms the nervous system and reduces the “alarm signal” coming from the brain. This improves how your body processes pain and can make discomfort feel more manageable.
Breathing deeply also reduces muscle tension, improves oxygen flow, and signals your brain that you are safe, not under threat. When the brain feels safe, it naturally lowers pain intensity.
This is strongly linked to the way the brain regulates pain through systems like the Autonomic Nervous System, which controls how alert or relaxed your body feels.
As Dr. Vineeta Ail, founder and chief physiotherapist at V HEAL Physiotherapy and fitness center, I often teach patients that breathing is not just relaxation—it’s a pain modulation tool. Simple slow breathing exercises can be a powerful part of pain management alongside movement and rehab.
