Tarabai, came to us on a busy day in the clinic propped up on a wheel chair with one marathi speaking person who was her neighbour. She was accompanied by a frail looking mother dressed in a typical Maharashtrian sari. Tarabai had lost function of both her legs a long time back and the accompanying disability had made her confined to the wheel chair. Recently she was facing vision related problems and when we saw her we advised cataract surgery for both eyes. We did not expect to see her again, because getting blood tests done and getting the required fitness seemed like a daunting task.
But the neighbor came back with reports and we were awe struck by the kindness shown by the people who came with her, who had in some ways supported to make sure she was living an independent life. So Dr. Rohit Modi & Dr. Shraddha decided to do her cataract surgery for free. But, the problems didn’t end there. Getting her to the operating room table was a task, and our driver cm clinic assistant carried her when needed and we got through both days of successful cataract surgeries. Our anesthetist doctors’ team was also supportive to manage her all through the surgery.
On the next day when we see the patient, Dr. Shraddha decided to go the patient’s house so that she wouldn’t have top spend money to mobilize a vehicle and request people to come with her. The local politicians had arranged for a room on the ground floor for her and her mother and installed flour-making machines so that both of them could make some money.
The society really came around for a person who had been rendered disabled. Each one had offered their own support without expecting anything in return. Recently we came to know that Tarabai had expired and all our staff members remembered her smiling face and determination. Maybe, she was at a better place in heaven… But with her example we think, the earth is a good place to be too.
