Why Freezing ???
In Parkinson’s disease the production of substance called Dopamine is affected. Dopamine is crucial
For the Normal signalling of basal ganglia ( an area in brain) responsible for initiating intended movement and controlling the rhythm and switching between different motor programs required for a single task
( e.g- walking is one activity but involves multiple motor programming like- walk straight, stop, slow down , take a turn, cross over the obstacle and then continue walking again, etc) .
In Parkinson’s this controller is disrupted
The green signal for eg to walk becomes weak and the red signal for stopping stays on for a longer time which make it difficult to imitate the next step.
The result is not paralysis- the person can still move, walk but becomes slow and less automatic
External cuing in the form of visual/ auditory/verbal/ tactile cues will not cure the disease but serves as great strategy to improve mobility and functionality on a daily basis and also prevent risk of falling.
