SPINAL TUBERCULOSIS. These patients present with back pain and most of them come with weakness of the lower limbs also. If not identified, untreated, patients can be disabled for life. If diagnosed early, this can be treated with medicines and without surgery. If you have back pain for long duration consult a Neurosurgeon without wasting more time.

World Spine Day 2025: A Neurosurgeon’s Perspective – Invest in Your Spine

As a neurosurgeon, World Spine Day—observed every year on October 16—holds profound significance for me. The spine is much more than a column of bones; it is the axis of human mobility, supporting every movement, posture, and vital function our body performs. This year’s theme, “Invest in Your Spine,” is both a timely call to action and an urgent public health imperative.

Spinal pain is now recognised as the leading cause of years lived with disability globally—a staggering reality that affects millions across all age groups. In India, both lifestyle and occupational hazards have spurred an alarming rise in spinal disorders, while delayed recognition and lack of preventive care add to the burden. As a specialist who witnesses the life-changing impact of spinal disease daily, I urge everyone to treat spinal health as an essential investment, not an afterthought.

What does it mean to “invest” in your spine? Preventive care must take center stage. Simple yet powerful strategies should become a part of your daily routine:
• Maintain optimal posture at work and home; avoid prolonged sitting and use ergonomically designed furniture.
• Integrate regular movement into your daily life—whether through stretching, walking, yoga, or core-strengthening exercises.
• Safeguard your spine while sleeping by choosing a suitable mattress and pillow, and refrain from sleeping on your stomach.
• Lift objects with your knees—not your back—and never hesitate to seek help with heavy loads.

Let’s pledge, as a community and as individuals, to “invest in our spine.” This small, consistent effort will yield lifelong dividends in health, mobility, and quality of life.

Headache and Women Health

More than 20% of women experience these kinds of headache.

Headaches and migraines are three to four times more common in women than in men

Not all headaches are the same.

Some types can be intensified by hormonal changes, such as with PMS or during menopause.

Let's break it down:

Tension Headaches: The most common type - feels like a tight band around your head. Triggers include muscular strain, poor posture, stress and anxiety.

Migraines: Intense, throbbing pain, usually on one side of the head. Can be accompanied by nausea and sensitivity to light and sound. Triggers can include stress, specific foods/drinks, lack of sleep, changes in air pressure, and hormonal changes.

Sinus Headaches: Pain around the forehead, cheeks, and eyes, usually with sinusitis symptoms.

Cluster Headaches: Severe pain behind or around one eye. Not fully understood but linked to the brain's hypothalamus, which regulates hormone metabolism and body temperature (as in, hot flashes).

TMJ Headaches: Pain in the jaw from temporomandibular joint issues, radiating to the head. Can be due to increased stress.

Neck pain: muscle stress in the neck can cause radiation of the pain from the nape of the neck to the posterior part of the head.

Hormones: Headache from hormone fluctuations feels as pulsating pain at the back of the head. Hormone fluctuations can cause fluctuation in blood pressure increasing the risk of this type.

Stress: Being similar to tension type of headache it can extend beyond head to neck and shoulders as well.

Amidst various triggers, hormonal changes are often ignored yet significant factors causing more frequent or intense headaches in some women.
