🪥 Are you brushing your child’s teeth the right way?
Brushing isn’t just about brushing twice a day. Frequency, technique, fluoride toothpaste and parental assistance all matter when it comes to preventing childhood cavities. 🦷✨
Here are 4 things every parent should know:
🦷 1. Start early
Start brushing as soon as the first tooth erupts. Brush twice daily for about 2 minutes using a soft, age-appropriate toothbrush.
🪥 2. Help your child brush
Young children don’t yet have the dexterity to clean every surface properly. Let them practise, but assist and supervise. Many children need hands-on help until around 7–8 years, depending on their brushing ability.
🧴 3. Use fluoride toothpaste
Under 3 years: rice-grain-sized smear.
3–6 years: pea-sized amount.
Supervise your child so they learn to spit rather than swallow.
💡 4. Don’t wait to visit the dentist
Ideally, a child’s first dental visit should happen when the first tooth appears and no later than their first birthday. Regular check-ups can then be planned according to their individual cavity risk.
❤️ AND MOST IMPORTANTLY — BABY TEETH MATTER!
Baby teeth help children chew, speak clearly and maintain space for permanent teeth. Untreated cavities can cause pain and infection, while premature loss of baby teeth can affect spacing and developing permanent teeth.
So don’t think: “They’re only baby teeth — they’ll fall out anyway.”
🦷 Healthy baby teeth = a healthier foundation for permanent teeth.
If you’re unsure about your child’s brushing technique, or notice discoloration, sensitivity, bad breath, food getting stuck, cavities or gum problems, book a dental check-up.
