The Link Between &

Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal disorder that's been linked to fertility issues, depression, weight gain, acne, anxiety and depression. Now, new research links it to yet another medical condition -- autism

If you have PCOS, you're not at risk. But your baby could be.

According to a new study published in the journal Molecular Psychiatry, moms who've been diagnosed with PCOS have a 59% increased risk of having a child with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

If you have PCOS, your body makes more androgens (like testosterone) than other women. This imbalance throws all your hormones out of whack.

Aside from all the symptoms we mentioned earlier, pregnancy becomes a challenge. And not just getting pregnant. Women with PCOS also have higher rates of miscarriage and premature delivery.

Why are males at higher risk of autism?

Many early-onset neurodevelopmental disorders, including autism spectrum disorders, are more common in males than females.

Female infants have larger volumes of grey matter around the temporal-parietal junction of the brain than males at the time of birth

The temporal-parietal junction, or TP, which is found under the temporal bones near the ears, integrates the processing of social information as expressed in others' faces and voices, a function that is impaired in those with autism spectrum disorders.

S*x differences in this area of the brain may be a clue as to why males are at higher risk for certain forms of autism spectrum disorders

Why Happens and What You Can Do to Get Better Sleep

We’re all familiar with that silly image of the person who resorts to counting sheep when they just can’t seem to fall asleep. But when you’re the one who’s been tossing and turning all night, insomnia is no laughing matter.

As many as one in four adults report suffering from mild insomnia, found a recent Harvard survey. That inability to fall and stay asleep could stem from a short-term issue, or be the result of a lifetime of poor sleep habits. Either way, it can’t be fixed with something like sleeping pills.

Here’s why insomnia happens, why you can’t rely on prescription meds to solve the problem, and how to develop healthier sleep habits for a lifetime of quality snoozing.

Why Insomnia Happens

Insomnia can be temporary—or it can be long-term. But regardless of how long you have to deal with it for, it’s never fun.

At some point or another, most of us will experience a short, unpleasant bout of insomnia. Often, it’s the result of stress or a change in routine (like a new work schedule or having a baby), or medications that mess with sleep like antidepressants, blood pressure meds, allergy meds, and corticosteroids. The good news is that usually, once you find a way to deal with the situation, your sleep pattern will get back to normal.

But other times, insomnia can become a long-term thing. Sometimes, that can happen as the result of a more serious health condition, like depression, anxiety, or sleep apnea. Other times, insomnia can stem from crappy sleep habits, like eating too many heavy snacks before bed, sleeping in an uncomfortable environment, or staying glued to your smartphone or tablet all night long.

Either way, missing out on sleep leaves you feeling exhausted, irritable, and generally unable to function during the day. And over time, it can put you at risk for health issues like obesity, high blood pressure, heart disease, and diabetes.

But no matter how long your insomnia lasts for, there’s usually a way to deal with the root of the problem and start sleeping better. And fortunately, there are plenty of options to consider.

The five biggest indicators that a child may have autism

Autism Spectrum Disorder ( ) affects 1 per cent of the global population, according to figures from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

A lifelong developmental disability, it affects how a person communicates with, and relates to, other people. It also affects how they make sense of the world around them.

The CDC figures also show that cases are rising steadily - with autism the fastest-growing developmental disability worldwide.

A leading expert has revealed the five biggest indicators that a child may have autism.

Connie Kasari, a professor of Human Development and Psychology at UCLA, says her aim is to try and dispel some of the mystery that surrounds the condition.

As many studies have now shown, early intervention is critical for the best outcomes in children with autism, and many believe the earlier the better.

Only with a diagnosis can parents begin to obtain necessary intervention services for their child.

Because is widely misunderstood, Professor Kasari has identified five questions that can help for parents and caregivers recognise the signs.

Commenting on them, she said: 'It is important to note that in each of the five areas that we have flagged we are most concerned with behaviors that are absent or occur at very low rates. The absence of certain behaviors may be more difficult to pinpoint than the presence of atypical behaviors. But concerns in any of the five areas above should prompt a parent to investigate screening their child for autism.'

These 5 indicators are

1. Does the baby respond to his or her name when called?
2. Does the young child engage in 'joint attention'?
3. Does the child imitate others?
4. Does the child respond emotionally to others?
5. Does the baby engage in pretend play?

What skills are affected by dyslexia?

doesn’t just affect reading and writing. Here are some everyday skills and activities your child may be struggling with because of this learning issue:

Social skills: There are several ways dyslexia can affect your child’s social life. Struggling in school can make your child feel inferior around other kids. Your child may stop trying to make new friends or may avoid group activities. Your child may also have trouble understanding jokes or sarcasm. You can help your child decode humor and also try different strategies to improve self-esteem.

Listening comprehension: People with dyslexia tend to be better listeners than readers. But dyslexia can make it hard to filter out background noise.[6] This means your child could have trouble following what the teacher is saying in a noisy classroom. Sitting near the teacher can help reduce distractions.

Memory: Kids with dyslexia can take so long to read a sentence that they may not remember the sentence that came before it. This makes it tough to grasp the meaning of the text. Listening to an audio version or using other kinds of assistive technology can help.

Navigation: Children with dyslexia may struggle with spatial concepts such as “left” and “right.” This can lead to fears about getting lost in school hallways and other familiar places. Using a buddy system can help with transitioning from class to class.

Time management: Dyslexia can make it hard to tell time or stick to a schedule. A cell phone alarm, picture schedule and other prompts can help keep kids (and adults) on track.

Eye Tracking Communication for Individuals that are Non-Verbal

Opening up the world of communication for a nonverbal child or adult can be a challenge, but today, technology continues to amaze.

Tobii Technology, which has led the charge for eye tracking and gaze interaction technology for individuals that are nonverbal and with limited ability to physically interact, announced that its new Tobii I-Series is now available, and will be shipping next month. The new generation of speech generating devices offers several improvements based on customer feedback and technological advances that build on the success of its C-Series.

The Tobii I-Series was designed as an assistive/augmentative communication device for people who are nonverbal, but also have difficulty controlling other parts of their body. Often, people with , muscular dystrophy, Lou Gehrig’s disease or spinal cord injuries have little or no control of their hands or feet. The Tobii is unique in that it is operated by the eyes – which opens up a new option for people who previously had few.
