Therapists talk about history, make connections, and track shifts in behaviour and feelings. But in all of this, it is for the therapist to be carefull about not being a therapist who knows, who see’s what’s really going on. Instead, understand and acknowledge that the two of you are figuring things out as you go along.

Your not-knowing stance may feel strange to the patient at first as they come in seeking an authority figure to guide them. As the therapist continues doing less and inviting the patient for collaboration - it creates a different self with other experience for the patient and that’s what matters the most.

We believe in fairy tales and Cinderella stories, stories where, through effort and perseverance, things always workout. We rise to meet the adversity head-on. We don’t let our troubles get us down, or at least, we don’t let them keep us there. Our heroes- whether real or fictional- are models of bravery and courage in the face of pain. The villain, the disappointing characters, are the ones too stubborn to turn their pain around.

We are an overcoming culture. We have got a culture that says bad things happen in order to help you grow, and no matter how bleak it seems, the end result is always worth the struggle. Grieving people are met with impatience precisely because they are failing the cultural storyline of overcoming adversity. If you don’t transform, you have failed.

As a culture, we don’t want to hear that there are things that can’t be fixed. As a culture, we don’t want to hear that there is some pain that never gets redeemed. Some things we learn to live with, and that’s not the same as everything working out in the end. No matter how many rainbows and butterflies you stick into the narrative, some stories just don’t work out. Loss, pain and grief exist in this world, and they are never redeemed. They are carried.

Hi!
Are you looking for some interesting skill enhancing program this summer? Are you being burdened with 150 hours of log sheets to fill before the summer is over, in the middle of a pandemic?
Ms. Preetika Kapoor, a counselling psychologist and former Amity soft skills trainer, has launched her very own The Mental Health Project’ 21! It is a mix of training in module development, research, focus group discussions and much more.

You can find out more about the project on her IG page .

The world prioritizes independence over mutual care, and requires us to work long hours. This results into a “care deficit (Hochschild, "the culture of politics") where there are only few intuitions that anchor us, nourish us or give us meaning. For psychotherapists, it is easy to fall into this void.
Because if not us, then who? Increasingly it is women — as daughters, sisters, wives, mothers, caretakers, teachers, medical professionals, child care workers and psychotherapists —who shoulder the care deficit which is always on the rise. Especially, during crisis like, the pandemic.
There are very few male psychotherapists, as is a trend when it comes to caretaking industries, female psychotherapists suffer with the responsibility of shouldering the deficit alone, and being ‘motherly.’

This group will make way for us to have an open, exploratory discussion about how internalised patriarchy is now affecting how we, woman psychotherapists, work as mental health professionals.
