Is your child a picky eater, or is there more behind their food choices?

Many children have food preferences, but sometimes eating difficulties can be linked to sensory needs, oral motor skills, or sensitivity to textures, tastes, and smells.

A child refusing food may not always be “being stubborn.” It may be their way of communicating that something about the eating experience feels difficult or overwhelming.

If your child eats a very limited variety of foods, avoids certain textures, struggles with chewing, or mealtimes often become stressful, it may be worth looking at the bigger picture.

Understanding the reason behind eating challenges is the first step towards providing the right support.

Observe. Understand. Support.

“Just wait, they’ll speak when they’re ready.”

Sometimes children do need time. But when a parent has persistent concerns about communication, simply waiting may not be enough.

Communication is much more than spoken words.

A child may communicate through gestures, pictures, signs, sounds, or AAC. Support can begin by helping the child express wants, needs, choices, and emotions in a way that works for them.

The goal is not only to make a child speak.

The goal is to help the child communicate effectively.

If you are noticing limited gestures, difficulty expressing needs, inconsistent responses, or frequent frustration around communication, it may be worth seeking professional guidance.

Don’t just wait. Observe. Understand. Support.

Play is not “just play.” It is one of the most important ways children learn, communicate, and connect with the world around them.

Through play, children build communication, social understanding, problem-solving, emotional regulation, and motor skills, often all at the same time.

Sometimes, differences in play can also give us important developmental clues. A child may repeat the same play pattern, rarely engage in pretend play, struggle to take turns, find it difficult to join others, or use toys in very limited ways.

One behavior alone does not define a developmental concern. What matters is the overall pattern and how it affects the child’s everyday interaction and learning.

If you are concerned about your child’s play skills or overall development, reach out to CCAW for a developmental evaluation.

Around here, we are unlearning the idea that a child saying “no” is simply being difficult.

Sometimes, “no” is communication.

It may mean the activity feels overwhelming, the child needs more predictability, wants a different choice, or is not ready to participate in that moment.

Instead of focusing only on getting compliance, we can pause and ask what the behaviour may be communicating.

Offering choices, preparing the child for what comes next, and making the activity feel more predictable can often support better participation and engagement.

The goal is not always to turn a “no” into a “yes.”

The goal is to understand what the “no” is telling us.

A new space, but the same heart, commitment, and purpose.

This center has been created with the hope of giving children, adolescents, and families a space where they can feel understood, supported, and cared for.

Every room carries the same belief we have always held at CCAW: that the right environment, the right guidance, and the right support can make a meaningful difference.

We are incredibly happy to open the doors to this new chapter and welcome our families into a space built with care, warmth, and intention.

Here’s to new beginnings, continued journeys, and many more milestones together.

Is your child copying you?

Simple actions like clapping, waving, copying sounds, or pretending during play are important early learning skills.

Imitation supports communication, social connection, and play. If your child rarely copies actions, gestures, or sounds, especially alongside other developmental concerns, it may be worth looking closer.

If you are noticing this in your child, reach out to CCAW for developmental guidance.

What if a child refuses to come for therapy, or regular therapy is not easily accessible?

Dr. Deepak explains that the first step is not to force the child but to prepare them gradually. Parents and therapists can work together to support regulation, ease transitions, and introduce therapy at a pace the child can manage.

For families living in remote areas or outside India, CCAW home plans can help bridge the gap when regular one-to-one therapy is difficult to access.

Most importantly, these plans are not standardized.

They are customized according to the child’s developmental needs, sensory profile, speech and language level, educational needs, and parent inputs, with ongoing professional guidance and follow-up.

Because every child needs a plan built around their needs, not a plan designed for everyone.
