What happens after a hospital adopts the NABH Digital Health Standards?

An independent study by the Max Institute of Healthcare Management, Indian School of Business (ISB) provides some useful answers.

The study, “Post-Adoption Value of NABH Digital Health Standards: A Multi-Hospital Assessment in India,” examined the experience of DHS-certified hospitals across Silver, Gold and Platinum levels, with inputs from hospital leadership, quality, IT, operations and clinical teams.

Some of the key findings:

• 98.1% of respondents identified improving patient-care quality as a motivation for pursuing DHS.
• Overall value of DHS was rated 4.62/5, with data privacy and documentation quality also rated highly at 4.56/5.
• Reported digital maturity increased from 3.42 to 4.35/5 following DHS adoption.
• Adoption of EHR and RIS/PACS increased by 25 percentage points during the certification period.
• The areas requiring the greatest effort were staff training and behavioural change (84.6%) and workflow/process redesign (65.4%).

Perhaps the most important message from the study is that digital transformation is not only about technology. Hospitals need to redesign workflows, strengthen governance, integrate systems and, most importantly, enable people to use these systems effectively in day-to-day care.

For NABH, this independent assessment is valuable because it provides evidence from hospitals that have actually gone through the DHS journey. It also reinforces our belief that digital health standards should help hospitals move from digitisation to integration, and from technology adoption to meaningful use of digital systems in patient care.

We thank ISB and the participating hospitals for undertaking this study and sharing these insights. The findings will be useful as we continue to evolve the NABH Digital Health Standards and support hospitals across India in their digital transformation journey.

NABH is pleased to welcome Dr. Shyam Viswanathan Pillai, Chairman and Managing Director, Back to Roots Ayurveda, as a speaker at the NABH Patient Safety Conference 2026.

An Ayurvedic physician and healthcare entrepreneur with nearly three decades of clinical experience, Dr. Pillai has spent much of his career advancing the practice and acceptance of Ayurveda beyond India. After moving to the UAE in 2001, he became the first practitioner to receive a licence from the UAE Ministry of Health to practise Ayurveda and subsequently developed Ayurvedic clinics and wellness services across the UAE and other international locations. A BAMS gold medallist, he also holds an MD in Ayurveda and an MPhil in Healthcare Management.
