A curtain falling across your vision is not something to sleep on. 👁️
Retinal detachment is one of the most serious eye emergencies — and one of the most misunderstood. Because it’s painless, most people wait. And waiting is exactly what costs them their sight.
What is retinal detachment?
The retina is the thin tissue at the back of your eye that captures light and creates vision. When it peels away from its base, blood supply is cut off — and vision dies. Without surgery, blindness is the outcome.
Warning signs — never ignore these:
✨ A sudden burst of new floaters — very different from the ones you’re used to
⚡ Flashes of light — especially noticeable in a dark room
🪟 A shadow or curtain creeping across your vision from any direction
🌫️ Sudden blurring — especially if central vision is affected
The 24-hour golden window:
If the macula (centre of the retina) is still attached and surgery happens within 24 hours — the chances of full vision recovery are very good. Once the macula detaches, central vision may never fully return. Every hour of delay matters.
Who is at higher risk?
👓 High myopia (−6D or more)
🔨 Previous eye injury or surgery
👨👩👧 Family history of retinal detachment
🩸 Diabetes or other retinal conditions
Treatment:
Surgery is the only answer — vitrectomy, scleral buckle, pneumatic retinopexy, or laser depending on the type and severity. The sooner, the better.
If you or someone you know experiences any of these signs — please do not wait till morning. Come in the same day.
Your vision is not something to gamble with.
